Sec­ond Har­vest Pro­duce Mar­kets to be held

Ohio Heart­land Com­mu­nity Action Com­mis­sion will be host­ing free pro­duce mar­kets Tues­day, Sept. 27 and Fri­day, Oct. 28 from 12 to 2 p.m. in its park­ing lot at 124 Buehler Street in Galion. Cus­tomers must live in Craw­ford County and are required to sign an income eli­gi­bil­ity form and present photo iden­ti­fi­ca­tion. Cus­tomers should bring their own bags and boxes. There are lim­ited reg­is­tra­tions avail­able for O.H.C.A.C.’s back­pack pro­gram. The pro­gram pro­vides chil­dren with back­packs filled with enough child-friendly, non­per­ish­able, and easy to con­sume food to last one week­end. The pro­gram is for Galion City School stu­dents involved in the free or reduced lunch pro­gram. Par­ents must be able to pick up the packs at the O.H.C.A.C. office each Fri­day between 3:30 and 4:15 p.m. and return them the fol­low­ing Mon­day to be replen­ished for the upcom­ing week­end. Join Craw­ford Park Dis­trict nat­u­ral­ist, Josh Dyer, as he points out the sites and sounds of the for­est at night on Tues­day, Sept. 27 at Heck­ert Nature Pre­serve, 1601 State Rt. 19, west of State Rt. 602. The hike will start at 7:30 p.m. As the sun sets, life emerges. Lit­tle insects that were evad­ing pre­da­tion by day, make their nightly sojourns for food. And night-time strolls are an enjoy­able and relax­ing way to absorb more nature. Bring a flashlight.

Ohio Buck­eyes are native trees that were des­ig­nated as Ohio’s state tree in 1953. They grow well along streams, rivers and lowlands.

Galion Pub­lic Library to host Har­vest Party for children

The Galion Pub­lic Library, 123 N Mar­ket St, will host a Har­vest Party for chil­dren in grades K — 2 on Sat­ur­day, Oct. 1 from 2 — 3:30 p.m. The fun will include fall sto­ries, crafts and games. Dec­o­rate a pump­kin, bob for apples and more.

Weather per­mit­ting, the party will be out­side for a por­tion of the day.

Library to hold work­shop with local author

If you missed Rachel Mendell’s writ­ing work­shop ear­lier this month, you still have one more oppor­tu­nity to put your pen­cil and paper to work. Local author, Rachel Mendell, will be back on Sat­ur­day, Oct. 1 for her brand new, “Cre­at­ing Your Mem­oirs” workshop.

This two-hour work­shop will start at 9:30 a.m. and is designed to unlock dis­tant mem­o­ries and tap open doors that have long been shut. This will be done through the use of sim­ple every-day objects. Then,

you’ll learn tips on mak­ing a mem­ory into a story and get advice on cre­at­ing a longer work — your memoirs.

Mor­row County Quilt­ing Guild to host show

MOUNT GILEAD — The Mor­row County Quilt­ing Guild will host a quilt show, “The ABCs of Quilt­ing” on Sat­ur­day, Oct. 1 and Sun­day, Oct. 2 at the Mt. Gilead Park Ave. Ele­men­tary School gym. Show hours are Sat­ur­day, 10 a.m. — 5 p.m. and Sun­day, 11 a.m. — 4 p.m. There is a free-will dona­tion to enter.

The Guild made a king-size quilt which will be raf­fled. The draw­ing will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Sun­day and the win­ner need not be present to win. There will also be a silent auc­tion and a sale table.

The hon­ored quil­ter will be Loraine Stacey, who will dis­play some of her work.

The Mor­row County Quilt­ing Guild was estab­lished in 1992. The group cur­rently has 33 mem­bers who share work­shops, show-and-tell, chal­lenge quilts and spe­cial projects. Com­pleted quilts are donated to Touch­ing Lit­tle Lives of Ohio, sol­dier quilts, Heart­beat of Mor­row County, Wit­ness Pro­tec­tion Pro­gram and Hospice.

Ohio Mutual plans plant­ing party with Park District

BUCYRUS —The Ohio Mutual Insur­ance Group, 1725 Hop­ley Ave, will hold a”planting party” in front of the main build­ing, on Sat­ur­day, Oct. 1, from 8 a.m. — noon. Vol­un­teers from Ohio Mutual, the Craw­ford Park Dis­trict and the com­mu­nity will plant a custom-created blend of seeds. The blend will even­tu­ally mature as a vivid land­scape of col­or­ful native plants dis­cov­ered by the area’s orig­i­nal set­tlers hun­dreds of years ago.

The inno­v­a­tive two-year con­ser­va­tion project, made pos­si­ble with coop­er­a­tion of the Craw­ford Park Dis­trict, is called the Ohio Mutual Prairie Pre­serve. The goal is to con­vert a vis­i­ble area of the company’s main cam­pus from turf grass to native prairie flora.

Learn the art of divid­ing peonies

MANSFIELD — Reg­is­tra­tion is open for a work­shop on divid­ing peonies, to be held at King­wood Cen­ter, 900 Park Ave. West, on Sat­ur­day, Oct. 1, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Par­tic­i­pants will meet in the Exhibit Hall, located across from the Green­house. BUCYRUS — Bucyrus Lit­tle The­atre announces audi­tions for the sec­ond show of the 2011/2012 sea­son, “A Christ­mas Story”. Audi­tions will be held at the The­atre, 130 Songer Ave., on Oct. 2 and 3 at 6 p.m.

Mans­field Play­house holds audi­tions for Christ­mas Show

MANSFIELD — The Mans­field Play­house announces audi­tions for its upcom­ing Christ­mas pro­duc­tion “Best Christ­mas Pageant Ever” writ­ten by Bar­bara Robin­son and directed by Doug Wertz. Audi­tion dates are Tues­day and Wednes­day, Oct. 4 and 5, at 7:30 p.m. at the Play­house, 95 E. Third Street.

This delight­ful play tells the story of a cou­ple try­ing to put on a church Christ­mas show and hav­ing to cast the Herd­man Kids — a pack of awful pranksters that would try anyone’s patience. The Herdman’s cause may­hem on an epic scale but some­how the magic of Christ­mas prevails.

Per­for­mances will be Dec. 2, 3, 4, 9, 10 and 11.

Fall Fes­ti­val and Ben­e­fit Auc­tion to be held at Camp Mowana

Camp Mowana’s annual Fall Fes­ti­val and Ben­e­fit Auc­tion will be held on Sun­day, Oct. 2 from 12:30 — 5:30 p.m. The day will fea­ture great food, hayrides, crafts and the oppor­tu­nity to meet “Johnny Appleseed.”

There will also be pony rides, a pet­ting zoo and pump­kin carv­ing for the kids. Blue­grass and tra­di­tional music will be per­formed by Fid­dle Tyme.

The auc­tion, fea­tur­ing quilts, fine hand­crafts and many other unique items will begin at 3 p.m.

Grace Brethren Church to host Char­ity 5K run and walk

Grace Brethren Church is cel­e­brat­ing its 50th anniver­sary with a 5K run and walk as part of the Con­nec­tions Week­end cel­e­bra­tion on Sat­ur­day, Oct. 8. All pro­ceeds will be donated to the “Back to School” pro­gram through Ohio Heart-land Com­mu­nity Action, which sup­plies needy chil­dren with school uni­forms, shoes and school supplies.

The pre­reg­is­tra­tion fee is $15 and includes a T-shirt for the first 50 peo­ple to reg­is­ter. A kid’s fun run is $5. Both fees must be post-marked by Sept. 26. Race day reg­is­tra­tion fee is $20.

Con­nec­tions Week­end Golf Scramble

The Galion Coun­try Club, 4810 State Rte. 309, Galion will host the Con­nec­tions Week­end Golf Scram­ble (18 holes) on Sat­ur­day, Oct. 8. Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. with a shot­gun start at 10 a.m.

The fee per player is $100 and includes golf with cart, burger or brat lunch with chips, brown­ies and pop, door prizes, prox­im­ity games and skins game. Make up your own four­some or be paired up by the coun­try club. A por­tion of the entry fee may be tax deductible.

GCH plans ‘Walk on the Wild Side’ women’s event

Women from all over the area will have a chance to “walk on the wild side” at a brand new event on Oct. 13, AT 5 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Activ­ity Cen­ter, 115 Lib­erty Street in Galion.

The event, which is being planned and hosted by a spe­cial women’s group called the “Divas and Dar­lings of the Galion Com­mu­nity Hos­pi­tal Foun­da­tion”, will ben­e­fit women’s health ser­vices at Galion Com­mu­nity Hospital.

This year’s event is being spon­sored by Obstet­rics and Gyne­col­ogy of Galion as well as My Floors of Galion.

Avita Health Sys­tem is work­ing towards edu­cat­ing and pro­mot­ing well­ness for the women of our area,” com­ments Tammy Schott, Galion Com­mu­nity Hos­pi­tal Foun­da­tion director.

The Foun­da­tion and our Aux­il­iary are excited in their joint effort to help raise the nec­es­sary fund­ing which will ben­e­fit women’s health ser­vices for the hospital.”

King­wood to sell lily bulbs

MANSFIELD — The Ohio Lily Soci­ety will hold its fall sale of bulbs in the King­wood Cen­ter Meet­ing Hall, 900 Park Ave. West from 12 noon to 3 p.m. on Sun­day, Oct. 16. Many new lily vari­eties, as well as some of the more com­monly grown favorites, will be sold. Rea­son­able prices make this an ideal oppor­tu­nity for the gar­dener to obtain high-quality bulbs.

Mem­bers of the Ohio Lily Soci­ety will be avail­able to answer ques­tions about desir­able vari­eties and grow­ing lilies. The bulbs for this sale come from the gar­dens of mem­bers of the Ohio Lily Soci­ety and from whole­sale grow­ers. The soci­ety pur­chases bulbs in quan­tity for resale to the pub­lic. Prof­its from the sale will go for the sup­port of the Ohio Lily Society.

This series is to help you dis­cover what grief is and to develop a guide for your jour­ney of heal­ing. With enter­tain­ment pro­vided through­out the evening, the event includes Christ­mas car­ols, cer­e­mo­nial music and madri­gals per­formed by the Ash­land Uni­ver­sity Cham­ber Singers while the Madri­gal Play­ers present a new play each year along with other the­atri­cal stunts through­out the evening. Per­former cos­tumes are designed as authen­tic recon­struc­tions of period apparel; and the Feaste includes a four-course meal cul­mi­nat­ing in flam­ing bread pud­ding. Veg­e­tar­ian meals are avail­able upon request.

The 2011 Madri­gal Feaste Cham­ber Singers fea­ture Jonathan Barko as the King and Lau­ren Mas­saro as the Queen along with their court, includ­ing Jes­sica Blake, Sam Diemer, Erin Lin­gen­fel­ter, Brandy Riha, Katie Stone, Alex VanScoy, Katie Vargo, Jor­dan Black, Bret Cow­den, Matthew Daw­son, Christo­pher Gof­fos, Derek Jack­en­heimer, Cur­tis Reynolds and Drew Roth­haar. Led by Eddie Car­ney as the Jester, the Madri­gal Play­ers include Austin Arnold, Mad­die Beer, Kelsey Bowens, Jensen Glick, Katie Mounts and Nate Sayatovich.

A veg­e­tar­ian meal option is avail­able upon request. Due to prepa­ra­tion of meals, tick­ets are not avail­able at the door.
