Second Harvest Produce Markets to be held
Ohio Heartland Community Action Commission will be hosting free produce markets Tuesday, Sept. 27 and Friday, Oct. 28 from 12 to 2 p.m. in its parking lot at 124 Buehler Street in Galion. Customers must live in Crawford County and are required to sign an income eligibility form and present photo identification. Customers should bring their own bags and boxes. If you are interested in volunteering for either market, phone (419) 468‑5121 for additional information.
There are limited registrations available for O.H.C.A.C.’s backpack program. The program provides children with backpacks filled with enough child-friendly, nonperishable, and easy to consume food to last one weekend. The program is for Galion City School students involved in the free or reduced lunch program. Parents must be able to pick up the packs at the O.H.C.A.C. office each Friday between 3:30 and 4:15 p.m. and return them the following Monday to be replenished for the upcoming weekend. Night hike at Heckert Nature Preserve slated
Join Crawford Park District naturalist, Josh Dyer, as he points out the sites and sounds of the forest at night on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at Heckert Nature Preserve, 1601 State Rt. 19, west of State Rt. 602. The hike will start at 7:30 p.m. As the sun sets, life emerges. Little insects that were evading predation by day, make their nightly sojourns for food. And night-time strolls are an enjoyable and relaxing way to absorb more nature. Bring a flashlight.

Buckeyes for Kids program at Lowe-Volk Park
Thursday, Sept. 29, learn about buckeyes at 6 p.m. at Lowe-Volk Park, 2401 State Route 598, three miles north of U.S. Rt. 30.
Join Crawford Park District volunteer, Joy Etter-Link, for an informative and fun-filled program that will include a buckeye craft.
Ohio Buckeyes are native trees that were designated as Ohio’s state tree in 1953. They grow well along streams, rivers and lowlands.

Excellence in Diversity Awards Dinner to be held
MANSFIELD — OSU’s Mansfield office of Multicultural Affairs will hold its inaugural “Excellence in Diversity Awards Dinner” on Thursday, Sept. 29 at 6 p.m. in Eisenhower Hall. The keynote speaker will be Gene Smith, athletic director at The Ohio State University.

Galion Public Library to host Harvest Party for children
The Galion Public Library, 123 N Market St, will host a Harvest Party for children in grades K — 2 on Saturday, Oct. 1 from 2 — 3:30 p.m. The fun will include fall stories, crafts and games. Decorate a pumpkin, bob for apples and more.
Weather permitting, the party will be outside for a portion of the day.

Library to hold workshop with local author
If you missed Rachel Mendell’s writing workshop earlier this month, you still have one more opportunity to put your pencil and paper to work. Local author, Rachel Mendell, will be back on Saturday, Oct. 1 for her brand new, “Creating Your Memoirs” workshop.
This two-hour workshop will start at 9:30 a.m. and is designed to unlock distant memories and tap open doors that have long been shut. This will be done through the use of simple every-day objects. Then,
you’ll learn tips on making a memory into a story and get advice on creating a longer work — your memoirs.

Morrow County Quilting Guild to host show
MOUNT GILEAD — The Morrow County Quilting Guild will host a quilt show, “The ABCs of Quilting” on Saturday, Oct. 1 and Sunday, Oct. 2 at the Mt. Gilead Park Ave. Elementary School gym. Show hours are Saturday, 10 a.m. — 5 p.m. and Sunday, 11 a.m. — 4 p.m. There is a free-will donation to enter.
The Guild made a king-size quilt which will be raffled. The drawing will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday and the winner need not be present to win. There will also be a silent auction and a sale table.
The honored quilter will be Loraine Stacey, who will display some of her work.
The Morrow County Quilting Guild was established in 1992. The group currently has 33 members who share workshops, show-and-tell, challenge quilts and special projects. Completed quilts are donated to Touching Little Lives of Ohio, soldier quilts, Heartbeat of Morrow County, Witness Protection Program and Hospice.
Quilt lovers of all skill levels are welcome to join. The Guild meets the third Saturday of each month at 9:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, N. Cherry St. in Mt. Gilead. Submitted by Cheryl Jason

Ohio Mutual plans planting party with Park District
BUCYRUS —The Ohio Mutual Insurance Group, 1725 Hopley Ave, will hold a”planting party” in front of the main building, on Saturday, Oct. 1, from 8 a.m. — noon. Volunteers from Ohio Mutual, the Crawford Park District and the community will plant a custom-created blend of seeds. The blend will eventually mature as a vivid landscape of colorful native plants discovered by the area’s original settlers hundreds of years ago.
The innovative two-year conservation project, made possible with cooperation of the Crawford Park District, is called the Ohio Mutual Prairie Preserve. The goal is to convert a visible area of the company’s main campus from turf grass to native prairie flora.
Carrousel Anniversary

Learn the art of dividing peonies
MANSFIELD — Registration is open for a workshop on dividing peonies, to be held at Kingwood Center, 900 Park Ave. West, on Saturday, Oct. 1, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Participants will meet in the Exhibit Hall, located across from the Greenhouse. Cost of the class is $10, members & volunteers $8, and must accompany advance registration. Admission to Kingwood is free with paid class registration. Bill Collins, Kingwood’s head gardener, will demonstrate the proper methods of dividing and resetting peonies in the garden. Students will receive a division to take home and plant.

Bucyrus Little Theatre to hold auditions for second show
BUCYRUS — Bucyrus Little Theatre announces auditions for the second show of the 2011/2012 season, “A Christmas Story”. Auditions will be held at the Theatre, 130 Songer Ave., on Oct. 2 and 3 at 6 p.m.
Those planning to audition should be prepared to do “cold” readings. There is no need to bring prepared material. This show is not a musical.

Mansfield Playhouse holds auditions for Christmas Show
MANSFIELD — The Mansfield Playhouse announces auditions for its upcoming Christmas production “Best Christmas Pageant Ever” written by Barbara Robinson and directed by Doug Wertz. Audition dates are Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 4 and 5, at 7:30 p.m. at the Playhouse, 95 E. Third Street.
This delightful play tells the story of a couple trying to put on a church Christmas show and having to cast the Herdman Kids — a pack of awful pranksters that would try anyone’s patience. The Herdman’s cause mayhem on an epic scale but somehow the magic of Christmas prevails.
Performances will be Dec. 2, 3, 4, 9, 10 and 11.

Fall Festival and Benefit Auction to be held at Camp Mowana
Camp Mowana’s annual Fall Festival and Benefit Auction will be held on Sunday, Oct. 2 from 12:30 — 5:30 p.m. The day will feature great food, hayrides, crafts and the opportunity to meet “Johnny Appleseed.”
There will also be pony rides, a petting zoo and pumpkin carving for the kids. Bluegrass and traditional music will be performed by Fiddle Tyme.
The auction, featuring quilts, fine handcrafts and many other unique items will begin at 3 p.m.

Grace Brethren Church to host Charity 5K run and walk
Grace Brethren Church is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a 5K run and walk as part of the Connections Weekend celebration on Saturday, Oct. 8. All proceeds will be donated to the “Back to School” program through Ohio Heart-land Community Action, which supplies needy children with school uniforms, shoes and school supplies.
The preregistration fee is $15 and includes a T-shirt for the first 50 people to register. A kid’s fun run is $5. Both fees must be post-marked by Sept. 26. Race day registration fee is $20.

Connections Weekend Golf Scramble
The Galion Country Club, 4810 State Rte. 309, Galion will host the Connections Weekend Golf Scramble (18 holes) on Saturday, Oct. 8. Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 10 a.m.
The fee per player is $100 and includes golf with cart, burger or brat lunch with chips, brownies and pop, door prizes, proximity games and skins game. Make up your own foursome or be paired up by the country club. A portion of the entry fee may be tax deductible.

GCH plans ‘Walk on the Wild Side’ women’s event
Women from all over the area will have a chance to “walk on the wild side” at a brand new event on Oct. 13, AT 5 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Activity Center, 115 Liberty Street in Galion.
The event, which is being planned and hosted by a special women’s group called the “Divas and Darlings of the Galion Community Hospital Foundation”, will benefit women’s health services at Galion Community Hospital.
This year’s event is being sponsored by Obstetrics and Gynecology of Galion as well as My Floors of Galion.
“Avita Health System is working towards educating and promoting wellness for the women of our area,” comments Tammy Schott, Galion Community Hospital Foundation director.
“The Foundation and our Auxiliary are excited in their joint effort to help raise the necessary funding which will benefit women’s health services for the hospital.”

Kingwood to sell lily bulbs
MANSFIELD — The Ohio Lily Society will hold its fall sale of bulbs in the Kingwood Center Meeting Hall, 900 Park Ave. West from 12 noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 16. Many new lily varieties, as well as some of the more commonly grown favorites, will be sold. Reasonable prices make this an ideal opportunity for the gardener to obtain high-quality bulbs.
Members of the Ohio Lily Society will be available to answer questions about desirable varieties and growing lilies. The bulbs for this sale come from the gardens of members of the Ohio Lily Society and from wholesale growers. The society purchases bulbs in quantity for resale to the public. Profits from the sale will go for the support of the Ohio Lily Society.

Healing Journey series to start in October
HomeCare Matters Home Health & Hospice will be starting their Healing Journey series in October. The classes will be held every Thursday in October and the first Thursday in November starting at 6 p.m. at the HomeCare Matters office, 1220 N. Market St. in Galion.
This series is to help you discover what grief is and to develop a guide for your journey of healing. The classes are free and open to individuals and families in the community who have grief and loss needs. You can come alone or together with a family member or friend. Ashland University presents Madrigal Feaste
ASHLAND — Ashland University Department of Music cordially invites everyone to celebrate the holidays at the 36th Annual Madrigal Feaste slated for Wednesday through Sunday, Nov. 30 to Dec. 4. All performances begin at 6:30 p.m. in Redwood Hall.

Directed by Dr. Rowland Blackley, director of choral activities, the Madrigal Feaste is a dinner theater based on the period of Queen Elizabeth I of England around 1600. With entertainment provided throughout the evening, the event includes Christmas carols, ceremonial music and madrigals performed by the Ashland University Chamber Singers while the Madrigal Players present a new play each year along with other theatrical stunts throughout the evening. Performer costumes are designed as authentic reconstructions of period apparel; and the Feaste includes a four-course meal culminating in flaming bread pudding. Vegetarian meals are available upon request.
The 2011 Madrigal Feaste Chamber Singers feature Jonathan Barko as the King and Lauren Massaro as the Queen along with their court, including Jessica Blake, Sam Diemer, Erin Lingenfelter, Brandy Riha, Katie Stone, Alex VanScoy, Katie Vargo, Jordan Black, Bret Cowden, Matthew Dawson, Christopher Goffos, Derek Jackenheimer, Curtis Reynolds and Drew Rothhaar.
