Big sixth inning helps Knights to win over MG

By ROBHAMILTON

A huge sixth inning propeled Northmor’s baseball team to a 10–1 win at Mount Gilead Wednesday.

The Knights only led 3–1 entering the next-to-last inning, but were able to send 13 batters to the plate and tally seven runs as they blew the game open.

I was just hoping to scratch out one or two runs to get some insurance, but to get seven was great,” said head coach Buck Workman.

With the bases loaded with one out, Brandon Taylor drove in one run with a single. A wild pitch by Indian pitcher Brandon Taylor drove in another to make the score 5–1.

Mount Gilead would get the second out of the inning, but Zach Wiseman followed with an RBI single, Northmor’s Brandon Taylor walked to load the bases and Ronnie Thomas would then clear them with a three-run double to push the Knight lead to 9–1.

One more run would score on a bases loaded walk to Josh Montgomery, as the Knights pulled away to win by nine.

They hit some good pitches,” said Mount Gilead coach Greg Gompf. “We kept them off-balance for most of the game, but in the sixth, they put it together.”

The Indians led early in the contest when Mike Bland opened the second inning with a solo home run. However, the Knights responded with one in the third and two in the fourth.

In the third, a walk to James Donner and single by Zach Wiseman put runners on the corner. Donner would then score on a groundout by Northmor’s Taylor to tie the game.

Then, in the fourth, after Josh Corns singled, Montgomery blasted a two-run homer to put Northmor on top to stay.

That home run was a nice adjustment by Josh,” said Workman. “On his first time up, he struck out on that same inside fastball.”

Zach Carroll pitched for the Knights, striking out nine, walking four and giving up two hits. Mount Gilead’s pitchers combined to strike out five and walk the same number while surrendering 10 hits.

The complete story with pictures will be in next week’s edition of the Sentinel.
