With two more goals and an assist Sunday, junior Tony Amolo continued to punish opponents while improving his status in the Kenyon College record book. His five-point game at Mavec Field led the Lords soccer team to 4-0 shellacking of the Heidelberg University Student Princes.
Amolo, who has scored at least one goal in each of the Lords’ three games, has five goals and one assist for the season. He also has career numbers that include 30 goals, 14 assists and 74 points. His goal total ranks tied for seventh all-time at Kenyon and his point total is tied for eighth.
Kenyon looked to take Heidelberg’s best shot Sunday after the Lords twice defeated the Student Princes one season ago. The second of those two defeats eliminated Heidelberg from the NCAA Tournament. The Student Princes, however, didn’t put up nearly the fight the Lords were expecting.
Amolo began the Kenyon rout with his first goal of the game at the 23:38 mark. Working off a crossing pass from sophomore Oliver Wynn, Amolo got airborne and headed the ball over a leaping Alex Archambeau, the Heidelberg goalkeeper.
Ten minutes later, freshman Greg McNeer recorded his first collegiate goal. From about 30 yards away, McNeer collected a Heidelberg header out of the box and ripped his shot into the upper right corner of the Student Princes’ net. That gave the Lords a 2-0 lead going into the break.
Ten minutes after the break, the Lords struck again. This time a crossing pass found Amolo in the middle of the box. He then headed the ball over to Dalton Eudy, who booted it over the goal line from the right side. That goal was Eudy’s first of the season and it was Amolo’s first assist.
Finally, at the 61:42 mark, Amolo put Heidelberg away for good. Freshman midfielder Alberto Carmona deked a defender at the top of the box and delivered a pass to Amolo, who immediately struck it past a diving Archambeau.
Kenyon was much more accurate with its shots against Heidelberg than it was in its previous two games. Entering this contest, the Lords had six goals on 51 shots (.117). Against the Student Princes, they scored four times on 16 shots (.250).
The Lords improved to 3-0-0 with the result and next face a tough Carnegie Mellon team at Mavec Field on Saturday. Carnegie Mellon is also 3-0-0 and coming off a 4-3 upset of No. 3-ranked Messiah College. On the flip side, the loss dropped Heidelberg to 1-1-1.
