EMCO Gears Classic this week
The EMCO Gears Classic begins the 2012 season at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course this weekend, June 8–10.
Featuring GRAND-AM Road Racing’s top league, the Rolex Sports Car Series, the EMCO Gears Classic will start the season at Mid-Ohio for the fifth time in six years. Last season’s race was a thriller as the Classic closed both the track and series seasons in 2011. The headline event goes on track at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 9 and will be televised live on SPEED.
“We feel like this is the perfect event to begin our season and can’t wait to get it started. GRAND-AM not only brings close, competitive racing to Mid-Ohio but fans have tremendous access to the drivers and cars,” said Craig Rust, president of Mid-Ohio, “This year the pits are also open to fans with paddock passes for the first time at this event so that adds another exciting element to the weekend.”
The GRAND-AM sanctioned Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge and Total Performance Showcase join Playboy Mazda MX-5 Cup, Trans Am Series and Ohio Valley Region SCCA Improved Touring/Spec Miata Shootout competing in support of the headlining Rolex Sports Car Series.
Autograph sessions from nearly every series, the GRAND-AM Fan Zone and grid walks – before the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge and the Rolex Sports Car Series races – provide fans with ample opportunities to get close to the cars and competitors throughout the weekend.
Last year’s EMCO Gears Classic was won by the #8 Starworks Motorsport Ford-Riley in Daytona Prototype, but a runner-up finish for the #01 TELMEX Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates driven by Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas was enough to earn them a second straight championship. The GT class was won by the #57 Stevenson Motorsports Camaro, but Leh Keen and Andrew Davis landed on the last step of the podium to claim the championship for the #59 Brumos Racing entry.
Weekend General Admission tickets start at $45. General parking is free and children 12 and under are also admitted free. Visit www.midohio.com anytime or call 800-MID-OHIO (643‑6446) Monday through Friday from 8 a.m– 5 p.m. to order tickets or for more information.
