Cross country season begins for local runners

Mount Gilead’s girls’ cross coun­try team claimed sec­ond place in the Sec­tion D girls’ race of the OHSAA Pre-Season High School Invi­ta­tional, which was held at National Trail Race­way, Hebron, on Saturday.

A total of 18 squads took part in this race, with Min­ster win­ning. Mount Gilead was sec­ond and North­mor placed 15th. Card­ing­ton also com­peted in this race, but didn’t field a full team.

Ray­chel Gress led the way for the Indi­ans, plac­ing eighth in 20:30.99, while Rachel Bush took ninth in 20:58.58. Jenna Ship­man was next for the Indi­ans, plac­ing 15th in 21:19.71.

Sophia Friesen took 36th in 22:09.97 and Kelsey Sny­der ran 48th in 22:41.59. Taryn Chap­man placed 61st in 23:21.44 and Maken­zie McKir­gan was 68th in 23:35.55.

Also, Kendra Hart­man was 128th and Hope Hack placed 144th.

Northmor’s Bri­anna Heminger ran 63rd in 23:28.16, while Kendall Fout took 74th in 23:51.8. Kelly Pope placed 87th in 24:32.03.

Jes­sika Clark was 130th in 27:29.92, Saman­tha High placed 149th in 29:39.47, Naomi Camp­bell took 154th in 30:28.92 and Kyn­dall Williams ran 175th in 37:08.25.

Cardington’s top per­former was Shelby Brady, who placed 57th in 23:09.67. Jae­lyn Bal­lard ran 92nd in 24:53.98 and MaKen­zie Coul­ter took 157th in 30:39.49.

Mount Gilead’s boys took fourth place in the 25-team Sec­tion D boys’ race, while Card­ing­ton was 18th. The race was won by Maplewood.

Tyler Beck led the Indi­ans by run­ning 19th in 17:43.83. Jason Hea­cock fol­lowed in 29th place with a time of 18:00.66. Nic Pomeroy claimed 39th in 18:28.76, while Josh Wood­dell took 43rd in 18:37.14.

Logan Chap­man placed 50th in 18:59.14 and Cam­den West fin­ished 58th in 19:24.98. Paul Melcher added a 70th-place fin­ish in 19:34.4.

Also, Bran­son West was 92nd, Nicholas Mid­daugh ran 103rd and Kyle Ciballi placed 123rd.

Cardington’s Jacob Long fin­ished 26th in 17:53.95, while Mitch Yake took 28th in 17:59.95.

Josh Queener ran 144th in 22:10.2, while Mike Queener took 162nd in 23:22.27. Jared Gan­de­lot fin­ished 178th in 24:26.52, Matt Queener ran 181st in 24:48.29 and Alex Elam placed 210th in 29:01.11.

The High­land teams both ran in Sec­tion C with the boys plac­ing 18th of 26 teams and the girls tak­ing 21st of 23.

Logan Eber­sole led the boys by run­ning 18th in 17:58.22. Devin John­son placed 76th in 19:47.97, while Josh Irvin was 102nd in 20:38.03.

Kevin Jones ran 140th in 21:31.11, while Nick Parks was 191st in 23:46.78. Layne Bur­son placed 198th in 24:05.54 and Jonah Maggs fin­ished 223rd in 29:07.2.

Also, Andrew Jack­son placed 226th.

Highland’s Lady Scots were led by Lydia Hock­en­berry, who was 76th in 24:06.56. Kayla Davies took 121st in 26:19.68, Angel­ica Pres­ley fin­ished 131st in 26:56.05 and Jena Buch­holz was 132nd in 27:01.24.

Saman­tha Thomp­son placed 142nd in 27:27.18, while Katie Davies ran 143rd in 27:30.72 and Nic­hole Carter took 147th in 27:41.71.

Also, Sarah Klugh was 172nd and Bethany Porter ran 177th,
