Cross country season begins for local runners

Mount Gilead’s girls’ cross country team claimed second place in the Section D girls’ race of the OHSAA Pre-Season High School Invitational, which was held at National Trail Raceway, Hebron, on Saturday.
A total of 18 squads took part in this race, with Minster winning. Mount Gilead was second and Northmor placed 15th. Cardington also competed in this race, but didn’t field a full team.
Raychel Gress led the way for the Indians, placing eighth in 20:30.99, while Rachel Bush took ninth in 20:58.58. Jenna Shipman was next for the Indians, placing 15th in 21:19.71.
Sophia Friesen took 36th in 22:09.97 and Kelsey Snyder ran 48th in 22:41.59. Taryn Chapman placed 61st in 23:21.44 and Makenzie McKirgan was 68th in 23:35.55.
Also, Kendra Hartman was 128th and Hope Hack placed 144th.
Northmor’s Brianna Heminger ran 63rd in 23:28.16, while Kendall Fout took 74th in 23:51.8. Kelly Pope placed 87th in 24:32.03.
Jessika Clark was 130th in 27:29.92, Samantha High placed 149th in 29:39.47, Naomi Campbell took 154th in 30:28.92 and Kyndall Williams ran 175th in 37:08.25.
Cardington’s top performer was Shelby Brady, who placed 57th in 23:09.67. Jaelyn Ballard ran 92nd in 24:53.98 and MaKenzie Coulter took 157th in 30:39.49.
Mount Gilead’s boys took fourth place in the 25-team Section D boys’ race, while Cardington was 18th. The race was won by Maplewood.
Tyler Beck led the Indians by running 19th in 17:43.83. Jason Heacock followed in 29th place with a time of 18:00.66. Nic Pomeroy claimed 39th in 18:28.76, while Josh Wooddell took 43rd in 18:37.14.
Logan Chapman placed 50th in 18:59.14 and Camden West finished 58th in 19:24.98. Paul Melcher added a 70th-place finish in 19:34.4.
Also, Branson West was 92nd, Nicholas Middaugh ran 103rd and Kyle Ciballi placed 123rd.
Cardington’s Jacob Long finished 26th in 17:53.95, while Mitch Yake took 28th in 17:59.95.
Josh Queener ran 144th in 22:10.2, while Mike Queener took 162nd in 23:22.27. Jared Gandelot finished 178th in 24:26.52, Matt Queener ran 181st in 24:48.29 and Alex Elam placed 210th in 29:01.11.
The Highland teams both ran in Section C with the boys placing 18th of 26 teams and the girls taking 21st of 23.
Logan Ebersole led the boys by running 18th in 17:58.22. Devin Johnson placed 76th in 19:47.97, while Josh Irvin was 102nd in 20:38.03.
Kevin Jones ran 140th in 21:31.11, while Nick Parks was 191st in 23:46.78. Layne Burson placed 198th in 24:05.54 and Jonah Maggs finished 223rd in 29:07.2.
Also, Andrew Jackson placed 226th.
Highland’s Lady Scots were led by Lydia Hockenberry, who was 76th in 24:06.56. Kayla Davies took 121st in 26:19.68, Angelica Presley finished 131st in 26:56.05 and Jena Buchholz was 132nd in 27:01.24.
Samantha Thompson placed 142nd in 27:27.18, while Katie Davies ran 143rd in 27:30.72 and Nichole Carter took 147th in 27:41.71.
Also, Sarah Klugh was 172nd and Bethany Porter ran 177th,
