Seventh graders make trek to Washington

By EVELYN LONG -

Making the traditional annual trip to Washington D C over Memorial Day were 59 Cardington-Lincoln seventh grade students accompanied by 16 chaperones.

The four day — three night itinerary included scheduled tours and visits to Washington monuments, memorials, the White House, etc. but the highlight of the visit was the laying of the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Also highlighted was the laying of the wreath at the Viet Nam Memorial. This wreath is sponsored by Jenkins-Vaughan Auxiliary Unit 97 of the American Legion, Cardington. It is created each year by Shirley Dendinger, the unit’s historian. This year the wreath was laid by seventh graders Alyson Adams and Libby McConnell. It was placed at the adjoining Three Servicemen Statue of three men carrying infantry weapons. It has been called both The Three Soldiers and The Three Servicemen. The statue is placed in a grove of trees near the west entrance to The Wall. A flag is flown 24 hours a day. Also placed with the wreath was a proclamation noting that the wreath was made and sponsored by Unit 97.

Laying the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier were Nathan Gardner, Kaitlyn Bump, Nadia Kerman and Mac Warren.

The seventh grade students were also privileged to meet MG Linnington who was holding the planning book for President Obama’s visit to the Viet Nam Wall Memorial on Memorial Day.

The tour included a White House Photo Op at Lafayette Square, Ford’s Theater walk by, and tours of the Air and Space Museum, National Cathedral, National Zoo, Em– bassy Row, National Archives, World War II Memorial, FDR Memorial, Martin Luther King Memorial, and the Lincoln Memorial. They later visited the Mount Vernon Mansion Jefferson Memorial, Iwo Jima Memorial, Arlington Cemetery, Air Force Memorial, the Kennedy Center, the U S Capitol, Natural History Museum and the Smithsonian Museum.

Organizing the tour through Son Tours was Troy King. He was assisted by Donna Kill.

Students fund this trip themselves and through fund raising activities held during the year. Plans are currently underway for the tour in 2013.
