William Tiller

William C. “ Bill” Tiller, age 87 of Cen­ter­burg, died Tues­day August 14, 2012at River­side Hos­pi­tal in Columbus.

He was born on Decem­ber 11, 1924 in Buchanan County, Vir­ginia to the late Spence and Rosa (John­son) Tiller. He was a mem­ber of the North Wood­bury Freewill Bap­tist Church and the AFSCME Union. He had worked as a coal miner in Vir­ginia, dozer oper­a­tor for Galena Shale Tile and Brick for 27 years and a mechanic for ODOT for 11 years. He was a life­long diehard Democrat.

Bill enjoyed work­ing on his small farm and build­ing var­i­ous appa­ra­tuses for use on the farm. It was said if he could not buy it he would build it. He could build any­thing he could imag­ine, mak­ing a well driller out of a hay­baler or a ditch­ing machine out of a 1950 Ply­mouth. Bill loved to tin­ker with things and enjoyed mak­ing cane molasses. Bill’s chil­dren inher­i­tated his abil­ity to make some­thing out of nothing.

He is sur­vived by his wife of 62 years: Chloe (O’Quinn) Tiller and they were mar­ried May 15, 1950 in Clint­wood, Va.; daugh­ter: Judy (Mau­rice) Porter of Card­ing­ton; sons: Carl Leon (Mered­ith) OF Mount Ver­non, Billy (Vicky) of Mount Ver­non, Jeff (Joy) of Prospect, David (Becky) of Fred­er­ick­town; 21 grand­chil­dren and their spouses, 19 great grand­chil­dren, 3 great-great grand­chil­dren; broth­ers: Bar­ney (Nancy), Dewey (Sue) Both of Honaker, VA.; sis­ter: Lily O’Quin of Centerburg.

Pre­ceded by his first wife: Velva (Tiller) Tiller; Son: Clyde Estel Tiller; broth­ers: Theodore, John Henry, James and 3 infants; sis­ters: Nancy Jack­son, Mar­garet Elswick, Martha Tiller.

Friends may call Thurs­day from 5–8 p.m. at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, SR 3 at 61, Sun­bury where funeral ser­vices will be held Fri­day 11 a.m. with Erin Porter, Rev. Earl Ash and Rev. Gail Angel offi­ci­at­ing. Intern­ment will fol­low in the Bloom­field Cemetery.
