William Tiller
William C. “ Bill” Tiller, age 87 of Centerburg, died Tuesday August 14, 2012at Riverside Hospital in Columbus.
He was born on December 11, 1924 in Buchanan County, Virginia to the late Spence and Rosa (Johnson) Tiller. He was a member of the North Woodbury Freewill Baptist Church and the AFSCME Union. He had worked as a coal miner in Virginia, dozer operator for Galena Shale Tile and Brick for 27 years and a mechanic for ODOT for 11 years. He was a lifelong diehard Democrat.
Bill enjoyed working on his small farm and building various apparatuses for use on the farm. It was said if he could not buy it he would build it. He could build anything he could imagine, making a well driller out of a haybaler or a ditching machine out of a 1950 Plymouth. Bill loved to tinker with things and enjoyed making cane molasses. Bill’s children inheritated his ability to make something out of nothing.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years: Chloe (O’Quinn) Tiller and they were married May 15, 1950 in Clintwood, Va.; daughter: Judy (Maurice) Porter of Cardington; sons: Carl Leon (Meredith) OF Mount Vernon, Billy (Vicky) of Mount Vernon, Jeff (Joy) of Prospect, David (Becky) of Fredericktown; 21 grandchildren and their spouses, 19 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren; brothers: Barney (Nancy), Dewey (Sue) Both of Honaker, VA.; sister: Lily O’Quin of Centerburg.
Preceded by his first wife: Velva (Tiller) Tiller; Son: Clyde Estel Tiller; brothers: Theodore, John Henry, James and 3 infants; sisters: Nancy Jackson, Margaret Elswick, Martha Tiller.
Friends may call Thursday from 5–8 p.m. at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, SR 3 at 61, Sunbury where funeral services will be held Friday 11 a.m. with Erin Porter, Rev. Earl Ash and Rev. Gail Angel officiating. Internment will follow in the Bloomfield Cemetery.
