Indians fall to Elgin in close contest

By ROBHAMILTON

Mount Gilead wasn’t able to maintain their lead after a good first half at Elgin on Friday and wound up suffering a 27–21 loss thanks to 20 unanswered points by the Comets.

The Indians took an early lead on a 70-yard run by quarterback Payton Vanderkooi, but the Comets immediately fired back to tie the score on a long play of their own.

However, Mount Gilead finished the first quarter with a 14-yard scoring run by Vanderkooi and then increased it to a 21–7 margin on a short run by Brandon Wood.

Unfortunately for the locals, the Comets were able to control the game in the second half, scoring two third quarter touchdowns to tie the game and then taking a lead they wouldn’t relinquish in the fourth period on a one-yard run by Robby Ault.

Cardington Pirates

Early struggles proved fatal for Cardington when they traveled to River Valley Friday.

The Pirates gave up three touchdowns in the first quarter and two more in the second, as they suffered a 49–0 loss to the Vikings.

Cardington was held to 37 yards in the game, while the Vikings had no shortage of big plays to stake them to their large early lead.

In the first quarter, River Valley got a 74-yard pass for a score, as well as a 37-yard run and a 46-yard punt return. They then added touchdowns of 64 and 68 yards in the second quarter as they pulled away for the win.
