State Park preps for annual Apple Butter festival

The Mount Gilead State Park will be the scene of the annual Apple But­ter Fes­ti­val on Fri­day, Octo­ber 5, and Sat­ur­day, Octo­ber 6.

Friday’s events kick off at 8 am when the peel­ing and cor­ing of apples will take place at Shel­ter House Num­ber One. The apples will be pre­pared for cook­ing and the pub­lic is invited to join in the prepa­ra­tion. Snacks will be pro­vided. Please bring a knife and cut­ting board if you are able.

The Nature Cen­ter will be open from 3 pm to 7 pm and from 7 to 8 pm Trick or Treat will take place on the camp­ground. The roads will be closed to the camp ground at that time, so please plan to go around. At 8 pm, the judg­ing of kids’ cos­tumes will take place at Shel­ter House #1. Cat­e­gories will be 1. (Cutest/funniest; Most Orig­i­nal and Scari­est. Age groups will be under one year, 1–2; 3–5; 6–8 and 9–12.

Pet Cos­tume Judg­ing will be made fol­low­ing the kids judg­ing. Dress up your four-legged pet for the fes­tiv­i­ties and treats. Please keep all pets on a leash and out of the shel­ter house until judg­ing time.

At mid­night Fri­day and into Sat­ur­day morn­ing, the apple but­ter mak­ing begins.

From 7;30 to 10 am there will be break­fast served by the VIPs. Menu will be pan­cakes, sausage, sausage gravy, bis­cuits and eggs at Shel­ter House #1

The Nature Cen­ter opens at 10 am and there will be a hike from the cen­ter at 10:30 am.

From 11:30 am to 12:30 pm, Coun­try Games will be played in the yard across from the Nature Cen­ter. Hot dogs and ham­burg­ers, chips and bev­er­ages will be served for lunch from 12 to 2:30 pm in Shel­ter House #1.

Enter­tain­ing from 12 to 1:30 pm will be the Span­gler Sis­ters and Coun­try Trav­el­ers at Shel­ter House #1. Through­out the after­noon from 1 to 5 pm there will be demon­stra­tions set up around the park and crafts for all to make at the Nature Center.

The Coun­try Clog­gers from Joanne’s School of Dance will enter­tain from 2 to 4 pm and at 2:30 pm, the apple pie and cake con­test judg­ing will take place. To par­tic­i­pate please bring two pies and two cakes with the main ingre­di­ent being apple.

Enter them by 2 pm at the Shel­ter House. The pies must be a tra­di­tional baked flour crust pie. No refrig­er­ated pies, please.

Ham and Soup Beans will be served with corn­bread while it lasts at 4:30 pm and from 4:30 to 6:30 pm, Eliz­a­beth Cor­win will enter­tain in Shel­ter House #1.

Pump­kin dec­o­rat­ing will take place at 6:30 pm and the but­ton draw­ing will be made at 6:30 pm.

Camp­site judg­ing will take place at 8 pm. Cat­e­gories will be Best Fall, Most orig­i­nal, and Best Hal­loween. The Adult Cos­tume Judg­ing will take place at 9 pm. Cat­e­gories will include fun­ni­est, most orig­i­nal and scariest.

A break­fast will be served Sun­day morn­ing by the VIPS from 7;30 to 10 am in Shel­ter House #1. The menu will be the same as Sat­ur­day morning.

The Nature Cen­ter will be open from 10 am to 5 pm.
