State Park preps for annual Apple Butter festival

The Mount Gilead State Park will be the scene of the annual Apple Butter Festival on Friday, October 5, and Saturday, October 6.
Friday’s events kick off at 8 am when the peeling and coring of apples will take place at Shelter House Number One. The apples will be prepared for cooking and the public is invited to join in the preparation. Snacks will be provided. Please bring a knife and cutting board if you are able.
The Nature Center will be open from 3 pm to 7 pm and from 7 to 8 pm Trick or Treat will take place on the campground. The roads will be closed to the camp ground at that time, so please plan to go around. At 8 pm, the judging of kids’ costumes will take place at Shelter House #1. Categories will be 1. (Cutest/funniest; Most Original and Scariest. Age groups will be under one year, 1–2; 3–5; 6–8 and 9–12.
Pet Costume Judging will be made following the kids judging. Dress up your four-legged pet for the festivities and treats. Please keep all pets on a leash and out of the shelter house until judging time.
At midnight Friday and into Saturday morning, the apple butter making begins.
From 7;30 to 10 am there will be breakfast served by the VIPs. Menu will be pancakes, sausage, sausage gravy, biscuits and eggs at Shelter House #1
The Nature Center opens at 10 am and there will be a hike from the center at 10:30 am.
From 11:30 am to 12:30 pm, Country Games will be played in the yard across from the Nature Center. Hot dogs and hamburgers, chips and beverages will be served for lunch from 12 to 2:30 pm in Shelter House #1.
Entertaining from 12 to 1:30 pm will be the Spangler Sisters and Country Travelers at Shelter House #1. Throughout the afternoon from 1 to 5 pm there will be demonstrations set up around the park and crafts for all to make at the Nature Center.
The Country Cloggers from Joanne’s School of Dance will entertain from 2 to 4 pm and at 2:30 pm, the apple pie and cake contest judging will take place. To participate please bring two pies and two cakes with the main ingredient being apple.
Enter them by 2 pm at the Shelter House. The pies must be a traditional baked flour crust pie. No refrigerated pies, please.
Ham and Soup Beans will be served with cornbread while it lasts at 4:30 pm and from 4:30 to 6:30 pm, Elizabeth Corwin will entertain in Shelter House #1.
Pumpkin decorating will take place at 6:30 pm and the button drawing will be made at 6:30 pm.
Campsite judging will take place at 8 pm. Categories will be Best Fall, Most original, and Best Halloween. The Adult Costume Judging will take place at 9 pm. Categories will include funniest, most original and scariest.
A breakfast will be served Sunday morning by the VIPS from 7;30 to 10 am in Shelter House #1. The menu will be the same as Saturday morning.
The Nature Center will be open from 10 am to 5 pm.
