Robert L. Maddy

Robert L. “Bob” Maddy, age 84, of Mount Gilead, passed away Mon­day morn­ing, Octo­ber 22, 2012, at his home.

On July 25, 1928, Bob was born in Crest­line, Ohio, the son of the late Hubert F. and Mabel M. (Hotelling) Maddy. He grad­u­ated from Crest­line High School in the Class of 1946 and had also attended Pasadena City College.

A World War II Vet­eran, Bob served in the United States Navy from 1946 –1948.

On Decem­ber 7, 1963, Bob mar­ried Marie Fry at the Trin­ity Lutheran Church in Crest­line. They shared over 48 won­der­ful years together as hus­band and wife.

A self-employed truck dri­ver, Bob was an owner/operator for Bekins Van Lines out of Hill­side, Illi­nois. He drove a truck for 20+ years.

Bob was a mem­ber of the V.F.W. Post 2920 and Amer­i­can Legion Post 0488, both in Crest­line, and also belonged to the Craw­ford County Coon Hunters.

Bob loved the out­doors and wildlife. He enjoyed hunt­ing deer, pheas­ant and rab­bit. When he woke up in the morn­ing, he got out a deck of cards and played Soli­taire until he won a game. He also did cross­word puz­zles and had a coin col­lec­tion. He spent many hours shar­ing sto­ries with any­one who would lis­ten. Week­ends were spent cheer­ing for his Ohio State Buck­eyes and Cleve­land Browns.

Bob’s fam­ily meant the world to him. In the sum­mer he would take his daugh­ters on road trips in his truck. He would always bring them gifts when he returned from a trip. He was a won­der­ful sup­porter of his fam­ily and loved each one of them dearly.

Bob will be missed by his wife, Marie Maddy of Mount Gilead; four daugh­ters: Rhonda Prater of Hilliard, Brenda Maddy of Mount Gilead, Deena (Ken) Bar­cus of Safety Har­bor, FL, Linda Maddy of Mount Gilead; five grand­chil­dren: Kali Prater, Tara Prater, Dar­rian Maddy, Hai­ley Bar­cus, Grif­fin Bar­cus; two broth­ers: Don­ald (Ruth) Maddy of Wakki­a­cus WA, James (Bar­bara) Maddy of Crest­line; nine sis­ters: Betty (Charles) Conn of Crest­line, Mar­jorie Cook of Crest­line, Doris White of Atas­cadero, CA, Vir­ginia Nel­son of Crest­line, June (William) Payn­ter of Oolte­wah, TN, Janet Maddy of Crest­line, Mar­lene (Patrick) Volk of Galion, Patri­cia Maddy of Crest­line, and Mary Purs­ley of Crestline.

Bob’s fam­ily will greet friends from 4 — 7p.m. on Wednes­day, Octo­ber 24, 2012 at the Sny­der Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St., Mount Gilead. Ser­vices cel­e­brat­ing his life will be held there at 11:00 a.m. on Thurs­day with Pas­tor Ray Linn offi­ci­at­ing. Bur­ial with mil­i­tary hon­ors pro­vided by the Amer­i­can Legion Post 8054 and AmVets Post 87 will fol­low in Shauck Cemetery.

Memo­r­ial con­tri­bu­tions may be made to the Amer­i­can Can­cer Soci­ety or to Odyssey Hos­pice, and may be made in care of the funeral home.
