Skies clear for annual State Park Apple Butter Festival

Brilliant sunny skies following a night of rain, served as an invitation to visitors to attend the annual State Park Apple Festival held at the Mount Gilead State Park onOctober 6.
Ken Krumnow, president of the Volunteers in the Park, who organized much of the events and served up the hearty breakfasts on Saturday and Sunday mornings, said there were 465 diners at the first breakfast and 301 came the next morning.
Among the many events and activities offered to the visitors were the apple pie and apple cake baking contest. The apple pie contest was won by Patty Graves of Reynoldsburg, with an apple pie; Mount Gilead resident Helen Bowersmith’s apple crumb pie won second place and Teresa Dilsaver of Marengo, won third place with an apple walnut pie.
The apple cake contest was won by Barbara VanRomer of Edison with an apple pecan cake; second place was won by Patty Graves with an apple butter nut cake and Dilsaver’s apple caramel cake won third place
Costume judging was made at the children and adult levels.

1–2 years: (Cutest– funniest) Brooklyn Wallace, Marion; (Most Original) Adriane LeMaster, Prospect (Scariest) Keyan Clinginman, Groveport;
3–5 years: (Cutest– funniest) Ella Johnson, Mount Gilead; (Most Original) Isaiah Doles, Mount Gilead; (Scariest) Olivia Reed, Dublin;
6–8: (Cutest) Morgan Shipman, Bucyrus; (Most Original) Jacob Thomas, Mount Gilead; (Scariest) Joy Rice, Marion;
9–12: (Cutest — Funniest) Bailey Shuff, Marion tied with Victoria Shipman of Bucyrus; (Original) Brent Wallace, Marion; (Scariest) Jacob Nelson, Columbus.
Winners in the Adult costume judging: (Funniest Adult) Bert and Ernie: John and Jane Ann Dean of Marion; (Most Original) Abe Lincoln: James Slagle, Crestline; (Scariest) Monster Wayne Steagall, Fredericktown, Best Fall Camp Site: Martin Gahn, Fremont; (Most Original) John and Jane Ann Dean, Marion; Best Halloween: William Steagall.
Winners in the children’s contests were given prizes. The Best Camp site winners were given two nights at the camp and the adults costume winners were awarded one night at the camp site.
The Snowflake is the next State Park event and will be held November 2nd and 3rd.
The VIP’s will serve up a breakfast on the morning of November 4.
