Skies clear for annual State Park Apple Butter Festival

Bril­liant sunny skies fol­low­ing a night of rain, served as an invi­ta­tion to vis­i­tors to attend the annual State Park Apple Fes­ti­val held at the Mount Gilead State Park onOc­to­ber 6.

Ken Krum­now, pres­i­dent of the Vol­un­teers in the Park, who orga­nized much of the events and served up the hearty break­fasts on Sat­ur­day and Sun­day morn­ings, said there were 465 din­ers at the first break­fast and 301 came the next morning.

Among the many events and activ­i­ties offered to the vis­i­tors were the apple pie and apple cake bak­ing con­test. The apple pie con­test was won by Patty Graves of Reynolds­burg, with an apple pie; Mount Gilead res­i­dent Helen Bowersmith’s apple crumb pie won sec­ond place and Teresa Dil­saver of Marengo, won third place with an apple wal­nut pie.

The apple cake con­test was won by Bar­bara Van­Romer of Edi­son with an apple pecan cake; sec­ond place was won by Patty Graves with an apple but­ter nut cake and Dilsaver’s apple caramel cake won third place

Cos­tume judg­ing was made at the chil­dren and adult levels.

Win­ners in the Kids Cos­tume 0–1 age group were (Cutest– fun­ni­est) Brook­lyn Cur­tis, Mount Gilead; (Most Orig­i­nal): Harley Sol­win, Edi­son; (Scari­est) Jaya Spea­gall, Mansfield;

1–2 years: (Cutest– fun­ni­est) Brook­lyn Wal­lace, Mar­ion; (Most Orig­i­nal) Adri­ane LeMas­ter, Prospect (Scari­est) Keyan Cling­in­man, Groveport;

3–5 years: (Cutest– fun­ni­est) Ella John­son, Mount Gilead; (Most Orig­i­nal) Isa­iah Doles, Mount Gilead; (Scari­est) Olivia Reed, Dublin;

6–8: (Cutest) Mor­gan Ship­man, Bucyrus; (Most Orig­i­nal) Jacob Thomas, Mount Gilead; (Scari­est) Joy Rice, Marion;

9–12: (Cutest — Fun­ni­est) Bai­ley Shuff, Mar­ion tied with Vic­to­ria Ship­man of Bucyrus; (Orig­i­nal) Brent Wal­lace, Mar­ion; (Scari­est) Jacob Nel­son, Columbus.

Win­ners in the Adult cos­tume judg­ing: (Fun­ni­est Adult) Bert and Ernie: John and Jane Ann Dean of Mar­ion; (Most Orig­i­nal) Abe Lin­coln: James Sla­gle, Crest­line; (Scari­est) Mon­ster Wayne Stea­gall, Fred­er­ick­town, Best Fall Camp Site: Mar­tin Gahn, Fre­mont; (Most Orig­i­nal) John and Jane Ann Dean, Mar­ion; Best Hal­loween: William Steagall.

Win­ners in the children’s con­tests were given prizes. The Best Camp site win­ners were given two nights at the camp and the adults cos­tume win­ners were awarded one night at the camp site.

The Snowflake is the next State Park event and will be held Novem­ber 2nd and 3rd.

The VIP’s will serve up a break­fast on the morn­ing of Novem­ber 4.
