Adopt-A-Grandparent gift program underway

Melanie Greenawalt and her fel­low Mary Kay ‘Car Team’ unit are attempt­ing to see that all 96 res­i­dents at Wood­side Vil­lage Care Cen­ter get ‘adopted’ for Christ­mas this year.

It’s part of Mary Kay’s annual “Adopt a Grand­par­ent” pro­gram in which res­i­dents of nurs­ing homes receive a comfort-type gift for the holidays.

“We’re col­lect­ing $20 (per res­i­dent gift),” Greenawalt said. “We will go Christ­mas car­ol­ing and deliver the the gifts right before Christmas.”

The gift is the same for all recip­i­ents: a pair of fuzzy socks, Mint Bliss Ener­giz­ing Lotion for Feet and Legs, Hand Cream, and a bag of candy.

She said her unit has over 40 done cur­rently, and their goal is 96 — the num­ber of res­i­dents at Wood­side. If the group gets enough con­tri­bu­tions, they can buy for Ben­ning­ton Glen res­i­dents as well.

“Though (Mary Kay con­sul­tants) are doing it all over dif­fer­ent coun­ties, we decided to pick one spe­cific place so they could all get adopted,” she explained.

Any indi­vid­ual or busi­ness can con­tribute toward the effort. Greenawalt said even if they don’t get enough to cover all 96 res­i­dents at Wood­side, they will make sure every­one gets something.

“We’re not try­ing to make money,” Greenawalt said. “It’s just some­thing we decided to do as a unit. Every­body helps kids, but who helps the elderly? It might be the only gift they receive for the season.”
