Goodges Greenhouse and crafts ready for the holidays
By Taylor Kaser -
After retirement, Joyce and John Goodge of Marengo had no intention of just sitting at home watching the clock tick. Nigel a retired carpenter, and Joyce, a retired teacher at Highland, began pursuing their hobbies and turning them into a business.
John explained that they’ve always had lots of extra fruits and vegetables from their garden, and usually just gave them away to friends and family. But two years ago, they decided to expand their gardening and sell their produce.
Last summer, they sold fresh produce at the Mt. Gilead Farmers Market on Saturdays. Being at the market on Saturdays gave them a great sense of community, seeing fellow vendors and customers regularly.
This spring the greenhouse will be offering vegetables, flowers, and herbs. Customers can also put in requests for what they’d like grown, and Goodges will be happy to try to grow it for you.
Next to their greenhouse, Joyce sells her homemade crafts and candles. She also makes quilts, scarves, hats, and school apparel with school names and emblems.
The store is open 9 a.m– 6 p.m Saturday and Sunday. After December 21 they will also be open during the week 10 a.m– 6 p.m. Visit their shop at 2467 County Road 170.
