Northmor NHS helps support Galion Troops

On the fourth Monday of every month at the Galion VFW Post 4329 (229 South Market Street), volunteers are busy sorting through donations and packing them into boxes. Those boxes are care packages sent to military troops, who are stationed both on home soil and overseas.
Support Galion Troops, a local group focused on sending care packages to troops from Galion and surrounding communities, “Packs for the Troops” every month and different groups and organizations help with the cause. The VFW provides them with a back room free of charge each time.
On Nov. 26, students from Northmor High School’s National Honor Society helped out. Earlier in the month the NHS did a donation drive in grades K-12 to gather donations.
That evening those donations, in addition to other donations from the community, were packed. There were also special Christmas packages prepared as well, and the students signed cards to send with the packages.
NHS members held a K-12 grade classroom competition from November 7th-16th to collect items to send to troops from the Galion area. Tallies of donations were kept, and those students and staff members donating 50 items or more were entered into a drawing.
Winners included Justice Allen, Elizabeth Ammons, Keith Ball, Samantha Barrick, Katie Burson, Mikki Chapman, Jordan Carver, Brooke Clark, Sebastian Compton, Mrs. Ellie Donohue, Anna Erlsten, Jenna Estepp, Jacob High, Chevelle Jones, Rob Lee, Doug Meadows, Sierra Morley, Mrs. Ann Pfister, John Pfister, Mr. Chad Richards, Kyle Schaffer, Naomi Simpson, Ms. Karole Skidmore-Roth, Kazee Smith, Marissa Taylor, Dalton Walters, Miss LaNeta Wertz and Austin Yarnell.
“This is the second year the National Honor Society has helped Support Galion Troops, and the kids love to participate,” commented NHS Advisor Cindy Frye.
Gloria Smith and Nancy Green, members of SGT who both have sons currently deployed overseas, thanked the students for their help. They normally do not get that much assistance, and with so many hands working to prepare the packages, they were done in an hour.
Support Galion Troops is always in need of donations for the care packages, such as non-perishable food items and toiletries, and monetary donations to ship the packages (it costs $13.45 to ship just one box). The donations may be dropped off at the VFW or mailed to P.O. Box 334, Galion, Ohio. Contact Support Galion Troops at Galiontroops@gmail.com or call Gloria Smith at 419–468-4321.
