Ullom to retire as Cardington Fire Chief after 49 years of service

By Evelyn Long -

Long time Cardington Village Fire Chief Jim Ullom announced his intention to retire at the December 3 Cardington Village Council meeting.

In his letter of retirement, Ullom said he had been a member of the department since 1963 and fire chief since 1976. His retirement is effective January 31, 2013.

Council also adopted an extension of the agreement with Fort Morrow Consolidated Fire District for 2013 in which the village will be paid $4,000.

This agreement has been forwarded to the Fort Morrow District. The district has agreed to pay the village $3900 for each of the following years: 2009,2010, 2011, and 2012 for fire protection.

Council voted to repeal two ordinances related to the base rates of water and sewer as they apply to vacant units or temporarily unoccupied units in the village. It is noted that this applies to only those properties currently vacant due to death of the owner or relocation of the owner from the property for medical reasons or otherwise out of state for personal reasons.

Danny Wood was re-appointed as the village administrator, effective January 1, 2013 through December 31, 2017.

Acting Police Chief Bob Huston said that Jeff Risner, part time officer, has resigned and will be an auxiliary officer.

He also said there had been two more bomb threats at Cardington Yutaka but a suspect has been apprehended. He said the department had been asked for 24 hours of special duty at the plant through December.

A first reading was given an ordinance approving the edition and inclusion of certain ordinances as part of the various component codes of the codified ordinances of the village.

Village Administrator Wood said the street department had removed leaves, completed crack sealing; made a first attempt to repair a water leak on New Street put up the Christmas decorations and the village has received 50 tons of salt.

Council also adopted a resolution supporting the Whetstone Creek Watershed Balance Growth Plan.

Bills totaling $5021.21 were approved for payment.

Council entered executive session at 7:09, seven minutes into the regular meeting for the purpose of 121.22 (G) (1). The session adjourned at 7:59 pm. Regular session ended at 8:30 pm. After which council convened for a work session.

The next council meeting will be December 17 at 7 pm.
