Cardington hosts ninth annual Pirate Holiday Duals

Waynedale claimed the cham­pi­onship at Cardington’s ninth annual Pirate Hol­i­day Duals wrestling tour­na­ment on Sat­ur­day, Dec. 29.

In the first place dual, the Bears topped River Val­ley 42–27 to cap a 5–0 per­for­mance on the day.

They also had five wrestlers named to the all-tournament team in Tyler Wirth (106), Zack Nel­son (132), Jared Orr (152), Dakota Stan­ley (160) and Bren­don Stan­ley (170). Bren­don Stan­ley also was named the tournament’s Out­stand­ing Wrestler.

In the other final round matches, Coven­try defeated Ayersville 41–32 for third place, Coshoc­ton topped Cald­well 36–33 for fifth, Milan beat Water­loo 45–35 for sev­enth, Bel­pre blew out Newark Catholic 54–18 for ninth and Card­ing­ton fin­ished 11th.

The meet was a 12-team affair, but Gar­away was unable to make the trip to Card­ing­ton due to incli­mate weather.

Also named to the all-tournament team were: Ayersville — Alex Fry (220/285); Cald­well — Tyler Wiley (120/126) and Jared Lea­sure (182/195); Coshoc­ton — Mark Lep­ley (138), Dom Johns (170) and Josh Ack­ley (220); Coven­try — Josh Gunter (126) and Travis Gos­nell (285);

Newark Catholic — Caleb Ohl (113) and Dominic DeVito (120/126); River Val­ley — Collin Rol­li­son (145/152), Jor­dan Hale (182) and David Gif­ford (195) and Water­loo — J.J. Diven (145) and Bran­don Brenes (220).

Josh Ack­ley of Coshoc­ton won the Most Pins in the Least Time award, as he earned five in a total time of 8:05.

For Card­ing­ton, both Crew Cochran and Lane Wad­dell won three matches. Colton Jenk­ins picked up a pair of wins; while Eric Collins, Maken­zie Coul­ter, Jar­rod Fair and Tris­tan High won once.

J.C. Gor­man

The North­mor wrestling team took third place at the 51st J.C. Gor­man invi­ta­tional held in Mans­field last Fri­day and Saturday.

Both Jamie Baldridge (145) and Tyler Beck (195) placed sec­ond in their weight classes. Baldridge now is 19–1, while Beck is 18–1 on the sea­son. Beck’s loss in the finals was to Josh Lehner, the defend­ing state champ from Loudonville.

Both Colin Vis­conti (152) and Cody Ross (160) placed fifth. Accord­ing to North­mor head coach Scott Carr, Vis­conti wres­tled on a torn menis­cus and still earned three wins by pin.

Lane Fos­ter placed sixth at 170 points. He entered the tour­na­ment with a 2–3 record and wound up claim­ing three wins, two by pin. Also plac­ing sixth was Sam Neer at 126 pounds.

Mitchell Whisler (132) and Jake Far­ley (138) both claimed two wins in the meet.

Card­ing­ton placed 14th in the 23-team meet and had four placewinners.

Adam Reed took fourth at 120 pounds for the Pirates, while Lane Wad­dell was fourth at 132.

At 170 pounds, Colton Jenk­ins was fifth, as was Eric Collins at 195. Also, Thomas Jor­dan won once at 126 and Crew Cochran claimed a win at 285.

North­mor Knights

North­mor com­peted at the Mar­ion Hard­ing Clas­sic dur­ing Dec. 28 and 29 and fin­ished 13th of 32 teams.

Both Jamie Baldridge and Tyler Beck went 5–0 to take first place in their weight classes.

At 145 pounds, Baldridge beat Austin Mar­tin of Delphos St. John’s 8–1 in the finals. Beck, com­pet­ing at 195, topped Zach Week­ley of North­west­ern by 20–2 tech­ni­cal fall to win his class.

Also, Sam Neer (126) fin­ished sev­enth, pin­ning William Thatcher of Cen­ter­burg in the finals. Kyle John­son was sev­enth at 170 pounds, as he beat Kevin Kulma of St. Edward 10–3 in the finals.

Both Mitchell Whisler (132) and Jake Far­ley (138) won two matches, while Dylan Jenk­ins (106) and Grif­fin Jenk­ins (113) claimed one win.
