Cardington hosts ninth annual Pirate Holiday Duals

Waynedale claimed the championship at Cardington’s ninth annual Pirate Holiday Duals wrestling tournament on Saturday, Dec. 29.
In the first place dual, the Bears topped River Valley 42–27 to cap a 5–0 performance on the day.
They also had five wrestlers named to the all-tournament team in Tyler Wirth (106), Zack Nelson (132), Jared Orr (152), Dakota Stanley (160) and Brendon Stanley (170). Brendon Stanley also was named the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler.
In the other final round matches, Coventry defeated Ayersville 41–32 for third place, Coshocton topped Caldwell 36–33 for fifth, Milan beat Waterloo 45–35 for seventh, Belpre blew out Newark Catholic 54–18 for ninth and Cardington finished 11th.
The meet was a 12-team affair, but Garaway was unable to make the trip to Cardington due to inclimate weather.
Also named to the all-tournament team were: Ayersville — Alex Fry (220/285); Caldwell — Tyler Wiley (120/126) and Jared Leasure (182/195); Coshocton — Mark Lepley (138), Dom Johns (170) and Josh Ackley (220); Coventry — Josh Gunter (126) and Travis Gosnell (285);
Newark Catholic — Caleb Ohl (113) and Dominic DeVito (120/126); River Valley — Collin Rollison (145/152), Jordan Hale (182) and David Gifford (195) and Waterloo — J.J. Diven (145) and Brandon Brenes (220).
Josh Ackley of Coshocton won the Most Pins in the Least Time award, as he earned five in a total time of 8:05.
For Cardington, both Crew Cochran and Lane Waddell won three matches. Colton Jenkins picked up a pair of wins; while Eric Collins, Makenzie Coulter, Jarrod Fair and Tristan High won once.
J.C. Gorman
The Northmor wrestling team took third place at the 51st J.C. Gorman invitational held in Mansfield last Friday and Saturday.
Both Jamie Baldridge (145) and Tyler Beck (195) placed second in their weight classes. Baldridge now is 19–1, while Beck is 18–1 on the season. Beck’s loss in the finals was to Josh Lehner, the defending state champ from Loudonville.
Both Colin Visconti (152) and Cody Ross (160) placed fifth. According to Northmor head coach Scott Carr, Visconti wrestled on a torn meniscus and still earned three wins by pin.
Lane Foster placed sixth at 170 points. He entered the tournament with a 2–3 record and wound up claiming three wins, two by pin. Also placing sixth was Sam Neer at 126 pounds.
Mitchell Whisler (132) and Jake Farley (138) both claimed two wins in the meet.
Cardington placed 14th in the 23-team meet and had four placewinners.
Adam Reed took fourth at 120 pounds for the Pirates, while Lane Waddell was fourth at 132.
At 170 pounds, Colton Jenkins was fifth, as was Eric Collins at 195. Also, Thomas Jordan won once at 126 and Crew Cochran claimed a win at 285.
Northmor Knights
Northmor competed at the Marion Harding Classic during Dec. 28 and 29 and finished 13th of 32 teams.
Both Jamie Baldridge and Tyler Beck went 5–0 to take first place in their weight classes.
At 145 pounds, Baldridge beat Austin Martin of Delphos St. John’s 8–1 in the finals. Beck, competing at 195, topped Zach Weekley of Northwestern by 20–2 technical fall to win his class.
Also, Sam Neer (126) finished seventh, pinning William Thatcher of Centerburg in the finals. Kyle Johnson was seventh at 170 pounds, as he beat Kevin Kulma of St. Edward 10–3 in the finals.
Both Mitchell Whisler (132) and Jake Farley (138) won two matches, while Dylan Jenkins (106) and Griffin Jenkins (113) claimed one win.
