Waynedale claims title at Cardington Duals

Waynedale once again reigned as champions of the Cardington Pirate Holiday Duals wrestling tournament on Saturday.

In its 10th year, the 12-team tournament was contested through three preliminary rounds, followed by the semifinals and finals. Waynedale opened with a 69-12 win over Walnut Hills, a 78-0 win over Milan (Michigan) and a 71-6 win over Garaway. They then topped Ayersville 59-13 in the semis before defeating Coventry 58-6 in the finals.

Third place went to River Valley, who beat Ayersville 47-19 in their finals match. Belpre topped Coshocton 48-23 for fifth place, Garaway beat Ridgewood 48-17 for seventh, Milan outscored Mifflin 30-24 for ninth and Cardington earned 11th place by beating Walnut Hills 48-9.

The Pirates had previously dropped their duals to Ayersville (63-15), River Valley (65-6), Ridgewood (51-15) and Milan (41-21).

Cardington’s Lane Waddell, competing at 138 pounds, was the host school’s representative on the All-Tournament Team. Also picked were: Alex Fry and Mitchell Hines of Ayersville; Gavin Stalnaker, Manney Tullius, Daniel Law and Ethan Wiggers of Belpre; Dom Johns of Coshocton; Josh Gunter and Andrew Wilborn of Coventry; Ben Sexton of Garaway; Montrese Frazier and Hannibal Tate of Mifflin; Jordan Hale of River Valley; Colton Bethel, Kyle Bethel, Cole Zeigler and Garrett Bethel of Ridgewood; Edward Hampton of Walnut Hills and Christian Wellman, Chris Richardson, Mike Wilson, Brad Wardell, Reid Stanley, Dakota Stanley, Kyle Ice, Logan Snyder, Jack Staggs and Tristan Anderson of Waynedale.

Reid Stanley of Waynedale was named the day’s outstanding wrestler, while Ethan Wiggers of Belpre had the most pins in the least time, winning all five of his matches by fall in a total of 10:04.
