January 21, 2014

On Jan. 15, the Mount Gilead varsity swim team traveled to Marion to compete with River Valley, Mansfield St. Peter’s, Marion Elgin and Crestline. The Mount Gilead women totaled enough points to win their meet and the men finished in second overall to Mansfield St. Peter’s. Mount Gilead has the most combined points with 295, while St. Peter’s, River Valley, Crestline and Elgin rounded out the order of finish.

The only first place finish for the women or the men was senior captain Brianna Snow in the 100 yard butterfly. This shows the depth of the squad as the Indians racked up 13 second place finishes and 13 third place touches. Scoring for the Indians: Taylor Clark, Erin Zmuda, Snow, Lexi Hinkle, Julia Marshall, Savanah Christian, Erika Stevens, Courtney West, Jay Stratton, Jacob Barnhart, David Kamyar, Kyle Landes, Andrew McFarland, Logan Conrad, Aaron Evans, Kurtis Brown, Marion McGill, Spencer Faux and Hallie Marlow. Swimming season bests were Marshall, Stratton, McGill, Brown, Snow, Colton Long, Zmuda, West, Marlow, Faux and Landes.

On Jan. 18, the Indians hosted a meet at the Marion Y for Division II public schools. Schools competing and the order of finish were: Bexley, Tri-Valley, Athens, Mount Gilead, Marion Harding, Beechcroft, River Valley, Jonathon Alder, North Union, Ridgedale, Elgin and Alexander.

“This meet was open to small public schools like ours. These schools all face similar challenges, like driving long distances to practice and sharing the pool with many other teams. The meet was a success and it highlighted these schools very favorably,” said coach Brad Snow

Freshman Erin Zmuda had the Indians sole first place finish on Saturday, winning the 100 yard freestyle.

Swimmers that scored were: Elly Herr, Zmuda, Brianna Snow, Lexi Hinkle, Taylor Clark, Savanah Christian, Erika Stevens, Courtney West, Logan Conrad, Jacob Barnhart, David Kamyar, Kyle Landes, Andrew McFarland, Colton Long, Aaron Evans, Kurtis Brown, Jay Stratton, Spencer Faux and Hallie Marlow.

Touching the wall with season best times were: Conrad, McGill, West, Landes, McFarland, Barnhart and Long.
