Members and guests of Chester Arbor of the Gleaner Fraternal Insurance Society met at the Cornerstone Café, Mt Gilead, on January 20 to share the Samaritan monies the Arbor had earned the past year through their daily volunteer activities.

Thirty people were in attendance when a total of $2,008 was distributed among the following agencies: Habitat for Humanity, represented by Mike Porter; Bread for all People, represented by Sandy Steck and Deb Noll; the Morrow County Chapter of the American Red Cross, Rita Barton and Doris Hildebrand; Morrow County 4-H, Becky Barker; Marion Homeless Shelter; Chuck Bulick; Cardington Food Pantry, Jean Smith; Edison Baptist Food Pantry, Wanda Faust, Evelyn Edwards and Helen Edwards; Marengo Food Pantry, Judy Sivits and Gena Wiley; and the Trinity United Methodist Food Pantry.

An additional $500 was given to Gleaner Fraternal to be matched to make a $1,000 scholarship bearing the name of Chester Arbor.

Guest speaker at this meeting was Sarina Atwell, Morrow County dog warden who described the care of the animals in the facility, adoption of these animals, and the other duties she performs daily. She also spoke about the prospects of the new dog shelter and the pet food pantry. The $100 grant given by the Gleaner Home office was used to purchase dog food to stock the pet pantry.

Six visitors were welcome to the Arbor with social memberships.

Linda Ruehrmund, Arbor president, conducted this meeting.

The next meeting will be January 31 at the Cardington-Lincoln Elementary school Patterson Gym at 12:50 pm where the Pleasant Jumpers will perform a variety of rope routines in a program titled “Jump for Your Heart.” Visitors are welcome.

The Arbor will meet at 12:30 pm at the St. John Lutheran Church, Windfall, on February 20, to pack the sack lunches which will be distributed at the Cardington Food Pantry that evening.
