DELPHOS — A Delphos man will appear in Lima Municipal Court on charges related to a Saturday incident involving a snowmobile operated within city limits. Ohio law prohibits the operation of snowmobiles on city streets.

At 9:40 p.m., Patrolman Brandon Hemker of the Delphos Police Department saw two people riding on a snowmobile down Lima Avenue. Hemker attempted to make contact with the driver to advise him that he was not permitted to operate a snowmobile on the street. Instead of stopping to speak with Hemker, the driver accelerated and briefly tried to evade the officer.

The driver, Matthew Buettner, 41, of Delphos, did not evade police for long, however, as he soon came to a stop to speak with Hemker. Upon speaking with Buettner, Patrolman Hemker found probable cause to arrest Buettner for operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol. After being transported to the Delphos Police Department, Buettner was also issued a citation for driving an unauthorized vehicle on the roadway and failure to comply with the signal of a police officer.

Because the passenger in the snowmobile was 17, Buettner is also faced with a charge of endangering children. The passenger’s identity was not released.

According to the clerk’s office for Lima Municipal Court, no date has yet been set for Buettner’s first appearance in court.

Patrolman Hemker was not available to comment on the incident.
