Letter: End tax loopholes

March 11, 2014

Dear Editor,

Sen. Portman’s opinion piece (March 5, 2014) was a mixture of garbled propaganda and unsupported economic claims. He forgets (to be charitable) that enormous tax cuts ballooned the deficit in the first place. Ordinary Americans having been asked to incur more national debt in order to give tax breaks to the wealthy. Interest on the debts racked up by the tax cuts makes the deficit greater.

Nor is there any evidence that tax cuts, which are already in effect, have increased the number of jobs available in the United States. Overseas, perhaps.

It’s long past time for Congress to end tax loopholes that have escalated the wealth of a tiny group at the top astronomically while most Americans’ salaries have remained flat.

The second half of his column was obfuscatory blather, an insult to anyone looking for actual facts and suggestions with some hope of working.

Sincerely yours,

Jill R. Grubb, Bennington Township
