The fourth grade Destination Imagination team from the Park Avenue Elementary School in Mount Gilead earned the third place finish at the state competition held on April 26 in Reynoldsburg. As a result of this placing, the team advances to the Global Finals in Knoxville, Tennessee May 21- 24. This is the largest celebration of creativity and innovation in the world. Teams from around the world will be presenting their solutions to their challenge.

The team has been raising money and awareness for the Morrow County Dog shelter which has been battling flood waters and are seeking to change their location. The team has raised close to $2,000 and has created a video commercial which can be viewed on the Morrow County Dog Shelter web page, the school webpage and the Friends of the Dog Shelter web page.

They have partnered with the individuals from Whetstone Industries on the project and have developed new understanding and friendships with the individuals. They hold Friday meetings during which the individuals come to the school and meet with the DI members to discuss the project and create a craft. Individuals have helped with activity nights, sold prints and held a surprise Sundae party for the DI members before they left for their first competition.

The Global Finals, where the DI team has earned advancement, is the culminating event of every Destination Imagination season. In May, over 1,100 teams from 45 states, seven Canadian provinces and 13 countries gather to showcase their Challenge solutions. Over 15,000 people attend Global Finals to celebrate creativity and have fun.

Cost of the trip to the Global Finals is $6,000. The team is organizing fund raisers for the money which must be turned in by May 20. Helping to raise the funds is Doolittles, Mount Gilead, who will donate 10 percent of the profits on certain days when diners sign in. The team itself will be holding a car wash from 10 am to 4 pm on May 11 and May 18 at Auto Zone, Mount Gilead.
