Friday crash on I-71 claims one; causes major jam

A Friday afternoon crash on Interstate 71 between State Route 95 and the County Road 23 overpass in Harmony Township brought traffic on the southbound lane to a halt for several hours.

Troopers from the Mt. Gilead Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to the scene of a crash involving three semis and a box truck about 12:18 p.m.

Accident victms included semi drivers David P. George, 64, of Montrose, Pennsylvania, Michael A Muersch, 35, of Portland, Thomas E. Wolfe, 35, of Newark, and box truck driver Leroy Carter Jr., of University Heights.

Carter was transported to Grant Medical Center where he later died. Wolfe suffered minor injuries and was not hospitalized.

Troopers said all four trucks were involved in an assured clear distance ahead crash, but did not specify which driver or drivers were at fault.

Traffic was reportedly backed up as far as Medina and began moving about 4:30 p.m.
