PORTMAN WRAPS UP DAY ONE OF MAKING A DIFFERENCE TOUR ACROSS OHIO – U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-Ohio) today finished up Day One of his Making a Difference Tour across Ohio. Highlighting good policies and focusing on how to build on them to make a difference for Ohio families, Portman is meeting with Ohioans he has teamed up with to expand opportunities in Ohio and make good-paying jobs available to all, address drug abuse in our communities, and combat human trafficking. Portman will visit nine counties, traveling over 1,300 miles in five days. This tour follows up on Portman’s Jobs Tour earlier this month.

On the first day of his tour, Portman visited with members of the United Steelworkers Local 207-L in Findlay to meet with workers and retirees of Cooper Tire to discuss his work to help them win a trade enforcement case that will protect Ohio jobs.

USW Local 207L President Rod Nelson presented Portman with over 1,000 signatures from both union and salaried employees for helping protect Ohio workers at Cooper Tire, and the Findlay Courier was there to cover the visit:

“‘He came to our rescue,’ USW 207-L President Rod Nelson said. ‘He did the right thing. He investigated the allegations that China wasn’t playing by the rules … and he stepped up to the plate and represented the people in the state of Ohio and out of the results of this, we’re getting investment in our plant right now.’”

U.S. SECRETARY OF COMMERCE PENNY PRITZKER TO TOUR YOUNGSTOWN’S NATIONAL NETWORK FOR MANUFACTURING INNOVATION INSTITUTE – On Aug. 27, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker will travel to Youngstown to tour the America Makes Institute, part of the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI).

President Obama created the NNMI to strengthen the global competitiveness of America’s manufacturing sector and our workforce. The NNMI currently has six institutes, and three additional institutions under competition, each of which is focused on the development of a different 21st century technology.

America Makes is focused on additive manufacturing and 3D printing, and is already developing technologies that are being used in the aerospace and medical sectors. Like each NNMI institute, it is structured as a public-private partnership between industry, academia, government, and workforce and economic development organizations, creating a regional network that can help translate cutting-edge research into American-made products. America Makes is also working with educational institutions and companies to supply training in additive manufacturing resources that will create a competitive workforce.

While at the institute, Secretary Pritzker will participate in a walking tour of the facility. She will also meet with the leadership of the institute, and participate in a roundtable with local business leaders and industry partners from the Youngstown community to discuss NNMI’s role in strengthening America’s economy and workforce. Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH-13) will join Secretary Pritzker for the day’s activities.
