OTTAWA — Two Columbus Grove women are dead after a Friday afternoon traffic accident in Ottawa.
The crash occurred on state Route 65 near Road 9K in Ottawa Township shortly after 2:30 p.m. Friday.
The Lima post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol reported that Alan Ducey, 59, of Ottawa, was driving north on state Route 65 and approaching stopped traffic on Road 9K. Christine Hayden, 62, of Columbus Grove, was driving south on the same road approaching the the intersection. Asa Mortimer, 37, of Columbus Grove, was also driving south behind Hayden’s vehicle.
Ducey drove left of center in order to avoid hitting the stopped vehicles ahead of him and struck Hayden’s vehicle head-on. Mortimer’s vehicle then struck Hayden’s vehicle in the rear.
Hayden and a passenger in her vehicle, Joan Beam, 85, of Columbus Grove, were trapped in their vehicle. Hayden was taken to St. Rita’s Ambulatory Care in Ottawa with critical injuries. Beam was flown by medical helicopter to St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima with critical injuries. Both women later died from their injuries.
Ducey was taken to St. Rita’s Medical center by Putnam County EMS with serious but nonlife-threatening injuries.
Mortimor was taken to St. Rita’s Ambulatory Care by Putnam County EMS with minor injuries and was treated, then released.
