The Mount Gilead School Board got updates on current projects and enrollment when they met in regular session on Tuesday, February 18.

Tomorrow Center Director Karen Seckel reported the Center has put a cap on student enrollment, as upper and lower elementary enrollment are full to capacity. She said that they have received six or seven phone calls during the week for kindergartners and first graders. They have also capped seventh through tenth grade, with approximately six students on that wait list. She reports that the enrollment will be capped until they can get more space or more teachers. The enrollment deadline for this year is April first.

Seckel also shared that students at the Tomorrow Center will be working with the Gleaners association on a historical project about Edison. The time period will be 1880 and 1900. Community members will be spending time with the students going through pictures. The project will be on display at the school, April 17th.

At a previous meeting the board had discussed paperless board documents systems and had been considering two vendors. They have already received a presentation from the first vendor and this meeting featured a presentation by the second vendor.

Due to the weather, and February 18th being a snow day for students, several of the administrators submitted written reports to the board.

Technology Director Ryan Curtis reported that he is working on a “homegrown version” of electronic board agendas using Google docs. He stated that it would not have all of the features that the two vendors can offer however, the cost would be attractive. He said that he will discuss this in more detail at the March board meeting.

The financial reports were approved by the board as submitted. Member Virgil Staley commented that the permanent improvement fund is negative $15,000.00 and the maintenance fund is negative $53,000.00. Those two things, he said, is why teh school is looking at a permanent improvement levy.

The Board approved the employment of Brandon Dodrill, Instructional Tutor, Jacob Mories, Substitute Teacher, and Heather Sapatka, Substitute Teacher.

The board also approved the resignation of Monica Swank, Middle School Assistant Track Coach, effective January 21, 2014. The board approved the retirement of Jim Anderson, Sixth Grade Teacher effective October 31, 2014.

The board approved the employment of Chelsea Crothers as Middle School Assistant Track Coach.

The board approved the transfer of $200,000.00 from the General Fund to the Retirement Account in anticipation of those who may retire.

Mount Gilead Music Boosters meet on the first Monday of the month in the High School Band Room at 7:00 p.m. Christine Long shared that the last meeting was very productive. She stated that the biggest concern is to find a way to update what they have as far as instruments. She said that the choir seems to be doing well. Long stated that she has requested two lists, the first being what instruments might be needed in the next several years, the second list is of what they have on hand with the age of the instrument and the condition of the instrument. She stated that she has not received it yet but she knows they are working on it. She noted that the instruments the band has are very old and many are in poor condition. The boosters are looking at fundraising as well as an instrument recycling drive, where people would donate (and instrument) and have someone look at it to see what condition it is in, or trade them for newer instruments.

Athletic boosters meet the fourth Monday of the month in the HS Auditeria at 7:00 p.m. They will be holding a golf outing fundraiser in August.

PTO meets the second Monday of the month at Park Avenue Elementary Library at 5:30 p.m.

FFA Alumni meet the first Thursday at the HS Ag Building at 7:00 p.m.

The next regular board meeting will be held Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. at the board of education office.
