Dear Sir or Madam:

I have done some research on COMMON CORE, the new system of teaching our children and I believe it is a very bad idea. It has some good points but its bad points far outweigh its good points.

It first and foremost will be a complete turn around in the way our educational system operates. It will put more pressure on the students, who are in my opinon already stressed out by the pressure they are under, having to compete in a world wide market. It will put more pressure and work on teachers who are, for the most part, overworked and under mandates already to improve their test scores. Many good teachers may turn to other, more lucrative professions, because of the stress caused by the turnaround in teaching methods.

Common core will take away or at least diminish any power or control State or Local school boards have, deferring to Federal Standards and Regulations. The Common Core Standards are not at all clear, and in some cases, are not as stringent as they are under the current system. Under Common Core, students with special needs will not be tested on an equivalency basis, using a modified version of the standard test, as some states have, under the present system. Under Common Core, many textbooks will no longer be relevant and therefore, by replacing them with what Common Core considers relevant, will put an undue burden on an already fiscally overburdened local school boards. Many of Common Core Assessments will call for them to be online, which will mean that computers will need to be supplied for all students who may not have access to them, calling for more monies.

Being old, I have an old saying that might be apropo to replacing our current system with Common Core, “If it Ain’t Broke, Don’t Fix It”, not that the current system isn’t broken, but it’s not that broken, that a little bit of tweaking won’t help.

Common Core advocates a One Size Fits All mentality and not every child is - or should they be - the same as another child.

Sincerely, Darl Mills, Mt. Gilead
