For yet another year in a row, the Mount Gilead Barracuda swim team took home the Aloha Team Spirit award from the Colonel Crawford Hawaiian Invitational.

According to coach Dina Snow, “Being an invitational, our swimmers are not required to go. We don’t often have a very full roster to represent Mount Gilead as far as the swimming events go, but by dressing up, cheering and supporting their teammates, showing off their moves during the dance break and just having a good time in general, the team brought home the Spirit Award again!”

While Upper Sandusky took home the winning trophy among the visiting teams, Mount Gilead did turn in some good swims.

Rachel Shipp placed first in the 200 IM, 100 fly and 100 back. Her efforts also earned her new meet records in each of these events and made for some exciting races. Tyler Knight was first in the 25 free and 25 breast.

“Tyler came in second in the 50 free, but shared the honor of breaking the meet record along with the winning swimmer!” said Snow.

The boys 10-11 100 freestyle relay (Joel Conrad, Tyler Knight, Eric Mowery and Wesley Bush) also earned a gold medal. Erin Zmuda earned silver medals in the 50 free, 100 fly and 200 free.

“Erin had some good competition in this meet, and she was right up there with her teammate Rachel in the fly. It was her best time this season.”

Also scoring second was Eric Mowery in the 25 backstroke. Bringing home bronze medals were Joel Conrad in the 25 free, 50 free and 25 back, and Evan Zmuda in the 200 IM.

Scoring additional points in their individual events and relays were Wesley Bush, Casey Conrad, Kamry Grandstaff, Dylan Knight, Emily Knight, Alexander Koller, Rachel Koller, Kyle Landis, Hawke Littell, Keana Littell, Grace Mowery and Erika Stevens.

The team also traveled to Upper Sandusky for their only meet this season at an outdoor pool.

“We don’t host meets because our pool isn’t deep enough to use starting blocks safely and we are not able to install our backstroke flags. We were surprised to arrive at US and find they were basically in the same boat but were hosting a meet. Our kids were not really excited to start in the water or off the side, but they were good sports and turned in some decent performances,” according to Snow.

First place finishers were Erin Zmuda, Evan Zmuda, Casey Conrad, Joel Conrad, Mason Faux, Courtney West, Kyle Landes, Adriana Tinch, Tyler Knight, Xander Koller, Elly Herr, Logan Conrad, and Daniel Freeman. First place relays were the 11-12 boys medley and free relays (Mason Faux, Tyler Knight, Sammie West and Eric Mowery), the 13-14 boys medley and free relay (Evan Zmuda, Colton Long, Casey Conrad and Spencer Faux), and the 15-18 girls medley relay(Ellie Herr, Courtney West, Erin Zmuda and Erika Stevens).

Scoring seconds were Grace Mowery, Joel Conrad, Daniel Freeman, Cassidy Hack, Shelby West, Kamry Grandstaff, Liam Curtis, Tyler Knight, Kaleb Fisher, Shelba Fisher, Erika Stevens, Logan Conrad, Eric Mowery, Sammie West and Courtney West.

Second place relay finishes included the the 9-10 girls medley relay (Skye Shipman, Grace Mowery, Tinch and Keana Littell), the 9-10 boys medley and free relays (Mason Kidwell, Isaiah Fisher, Joel Conrad and Wesley Bush), the 13-14 girls medley and free relays (Cassidy Hack, Emily Knight, Shelby West and Meaghan McGill), the 15-18 girls free relay (Herr, West, Stevens and Hallie Marlow), and the 15-18 boys medley and free relays (Logan Conrad, Dylan Knight, Daniel Freeman and Kyle Landes).

Rounding out the scoring with third place finishes were Isaiah Fisher, Rachel Koller, Emily Knight, Colton Long, Dylan Knight, Sammie West, Hallie Marlow, Brice Haughn, Keana Littell, John McGill, Mason Kidwell and Spencer Faux.

The Barracudas will wrap up the season with a dual meet against Bucyrus on July 9 and the TCAL championship meet which will be hosted by Galion at the Marion YMCA on July 12.
