AMERICAN TOWNSHIP — A woman getting out of a car in the midst of an argument with her daughter was struck and killed by another vehicle early Tuesday, Sheriff Sam Crish said.

Carrie Adkins, 50, was pronounced dead at the scene at the intersection of state Route 309 and Defiance Trail midway between Delphos and Elida. Allen County Sheriff deputies were called to investigate the accident at 6:07 a.m. Tuesday, Crish said.

The incident happened as 27-year-old Paula Robinson, of Dog Leg Road, was driving north on Defiance Trail with Adkins, her mother, in the back seat of a van. The two had been arguing, Crish said.

When Robinson stopped at the stop sign at the intersection of state Route 309, the older woman said she was getting out of the vehicle, Crish said.

“They are stopped, and she just made the comment about getting out. ‘I’m going to walk,” Crish said.

Adkins opened the side door to the van about the same time the daughter began pulling out on state Route 309 to drive west, Crish said.

“At some point, turning on (state Route) 309 with the door open, she either jumped out or she rolled out. We’re never going to know that,” Crish said.

Adkins fell into the middle of the eastbound lane of state Route 309. An oncoming car was unable to stop and struck her. That driver, Valerie Ditto, 45, of Delphos, was not injured, Crish said.

It was dark at the time of the crash, and it was raining, Crish said.

The accident remains under investigation, but Crish expects it to be closed soon. He said no one will be cited.
