Veterans greeting veterans - that was the scenario on Saturday, December 21, when members of five Morrow County veterans groups took Christmas to veterans in three Morrow County nursing facilities.

Members of AMVETS Post 87; VFW Post 8054; Johnsville American Legion Post 754; Marengo Post 710 and the Morrow County Joint Veterans Council visited a total of 37 veterans, presenting each with a fruit basket (courtesy of Marengo Post 710); socks and sweats and a box of candy. Diabetics are given sugar free candy, said Mike McKinney, current trustee and chaplain with Johnsville Post 754. The ladies auxiliary of AMVETS Post 87 wrap each pair of sweats and the socks. A hand crafted card is placed with each veteran’s gift.

McKinney explained that AMVETS had delivered fruit baskets to veterans for 15 years and seven years ago decided to do something more encompassing. “They (the vets) were receiving fruit from other sources so we decided to add other gifts,” said McKinney. The purchase and preparation of the socks and sweats is made by the ladies auxiliary of AMVETS Post 87. The candy, socks and sweats are funded by the veterans’ organizations.

Making the presentations were McKinney, Carl Brady, Elizabeth Brady, Shirley Brady, Bob George; Dave Vermillion, Jerry Jagger, Don O’Brien, Ray Buffy, Ray Dietz, Burns Wiley, and Ray Evans aka Santa Claus.

Veterans residing in Woodside Village who received the gifts included Doug May, George Reeder, Norma Doyle, Gilbert Mullenix, Olen Hill, Ron Komer, Bob Chapman, Robin Askew, Ed Shrout, John Tennant, Walter Anpach, Ron Houck, Don Waddell, Richard Dall, Cecil Reeder and Ron Burge.

John Yost and Helen Bogusky, residing in Morrow Manor, received gifts and veterans who are residents of Bennington Glen receiving them included William Baldwin, Thurman Balsiger, Orland Green, Encil Hawkins, Paul Hoelzel, James Hollbrook, Raymond McGrother, Robert Pickett, George Reidmiller, Carl Rippel, Kenneth Ruth, Charles Shealy, Raymond Shipman, Michael Spearman, John Pennington, Harry Geaslena, Richard Wilde and Chris King.
