Mount Gilead Board of Education members received an end of the year update at their May 20, 2014 board meeting.


High school principal Deb Claus reported that the seniors last day of school is May 29th with graduation on May 31st at 4:30 pm. The Valedictorian for 2014 is Taryn Chapman and Salutatorians are Brianna Snow, Grant Picker, Andrew Evans, David Kamyar and Erika Stevens. Salutatorians have maintained a 4.0 or higher grade point average for their entire high school, career.


Claus noted several other accomplishments including scoring high marks at the State Ag competition with one student, Bailey Gompf, going to the Natiopnal level for judging.


She shared that their were two special Olympians who garnered places, Joe Herren received first place in the in shot put competition and second place in the 50 meter dash. Josh Stuber received second place in the shot-put and fourth in the 100 meter dash.


Claus relayed that the JOG competition did very well at the state level and that tri River’s held their senior night with Rocky Sword garnering the director’s award for top senior in his program.


Claus shared that Andrew Carver received the State Support Team 7 outstanding achievement award and 19 athletes receiving first team all MOAC for sports this spring season which is an all time record. The Girls track team took first place in their division and the boys took a close second place.


Park Avenue principal Monica Hubbard noted that Grandparent’s Day was well attended. There were two grandparents days, one for the intermediate and one for the primary with standing room only crowds for both events.


Brenda Legros, transportation supervisor reported that the bus drivers have completed CPR certification.


Legros also shared that they had a bus break down at a baseball game.


Superintendent Jeff Thompson stated “This exemplifies what we are working on. I commend the board for allowing us to get two buses that we did get. This fleet is extremely old and here we are. This problem is not going to go away.”


Legros stated that the bus drivers will attend the kindergarten assessments to demonstrate bus safety for the incoming kindergartners.


Special Education Director Christine Michael explained that Kindergarten assessments have changed. Due to the new changes they assessments will be done in May.


Michaels shared that one student will be graduating fronm the High school MH Life Skills classroom..


Middle School principal Rick Nabors reported that the middle school has finished up state testing. He noted that the rewards program they have implemented for the year saw 191 students who earned the trip to Cedar point. “The positive behavioral efforts are making great in roads discipline referrals are way down.,” said Nabors.


Tomorrow Center Director Karen Seckel shared that the Historical Day the center held had over 56 volunteers from the community. She shared that 8 students will graduate this year with 16 on target for graduation next year .


Seckel noted that there have been over 100 volunteers at Tomorrow Center this year not counting parents.


The Board approved the student supply fees for the 2014-2015 school year as listed:


Curricular Fees: Park Avenue Elementary, $35.00, Mount Gilead Middle School, $35.00, Mount Gilead High School, $35.00. Extracurricular Fee: MGHS Class Fee 10.00


The board approved the employment of Kimberly Hobson, Substitute Aide, Whittney Martney, Substitute Aide, Mac McLaughlin, Full time bus driver/custodian, Brad Sharp, Full time bus driver/custodian, Jeffrey Tolley, Substitute Bus Driver, Jodi VanHouten, Substitute Custodian.


The board accepted the following resignations: Maureen Flora, Musical Director effective April 16, 2014, Elizabeth Gerasimof, Cafeteria Server effective June 6, 2014, Gayle Hardin, Custodian effective June 25, 2014, Jamie Kintz, Cafeteria Server effective May 1, 2014, Randy Mann, Musical Director effective April 16, 2014, Ben Schaad, Intervention Specialist (Tomorrow Center), effective June 5, 2014.


The board approved: The Transfer of Sick Leave Gayle Hardin 5 days to the account of Jennifer Williams (A total of 5 days transferred to the account of Jennifer Williams after approval of this action.), Leave without pay Robert Fleak, May 29, 2014 (1/2 day)

The board approved: the list of certified and classified extended service days for the 2014-2015 school year. Issue certified and classified contracts for the attached list of personnel for the 2014-2015 school year, approved the Elementary, Middle and High School Student/Parent Handbooks for the 2014-2015 school year, approved the agreement with Step by Step Academy, Inc. for Specialized (SE) Services for a student beginning May 7, 2014, approved the job description for Hybrid Learning Coach/Technology Integrated Specialist, approved payment to Ryan Gallwitz of $475.00 for Google Apps presentation to Technology Committee, approved the Statement of Work for Staff Augmentation etween tekPartners and Mount Gilead Schools in the amount of $6,300.00 and approved the lease agreement between Mount Gilead Exempted Village School District and Village of Mount Gilead for a term of ninety-nine (99) years.


The board authorized continued membership of the Mount Gilead High School and Mount Gilead Middle School in the Ohio High School Athletic Association (O.H.S.A.A.) for the 2014-2015 school year. These schools will conduct their athletics in accordance with the constitutions, bylaws, regulations, interpretations, and decision of the O.H.S.A.A.


The Board approved this resolution stating the supplemental positions, after previous Board action, have been offered to certificated employees of the district, with the district not receiving any acceptance from persons qualified to fill the positions. Also, these supplemental positions have been advertised to qualified certificated personnel not employed by the district, and the district has not received any acceptance from persons qualified to fill the positions. Since no qualified certificated individual has accepted a supplemental position as recommended by the Superintendent, the Board of Education may employ non- certificated persons for the district’s supplemental contract positions.


The board approved the attached list of supplemental contracts for the following persons in the designated positions for the 2014-2015 school year, according to the adopted salary schedule. These persons have the minimum qualifications for the stated positions as established by the State Board of Education regulations (OAC 3301-27-01).


The board approved the consulting services agreement between Dellicker Strategies, LLC and Mount Gilead Exempted Village School District for $65,000.00. Thompson explained that this is phase two of Dellicker strategies they have passed the first round of the straight A grant and will know the results of round two in a few weeks.


Music Boosters is held the first Monday of the month at the High School Band Room at 7:00 p.m. Chris Long reported that June 21st they will be doing an electronics recycling from 9 am to 1 pm in the front high school parking lot.


July 19th will be the Fundraiser with the Red Cross blood drive.


In August they will need volunteers to man fair gates. This is the biggest fundraiser for them but also requires the most people. Four shifts per day four gates. 3 to 9 people per shift.


They are asking people who have instruments that they no longer use to please donate them to the school


PTO meets the second Monday of the month at Park Avenue Elementary Library at 5:30 p.m.


Athletic Boosters meets the fourth Monday of the month at the HS Auditeria at 7:00 p.m.


FFA Alumni meets the first Thursday of the month at the HS Ag Building at 7:00 p.m.


The next regular board meeting will be held Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. at the board of education office.
