Morrow County United Way (U.W.) Director Jodi Hayes and United Way Campaign Chairman, Chris Truax, had a couple surprises up their sleeve at the July Chamber of Commerce meeting. Chamber members first surprise was that they were being served a free lunch, compliments of United Way.

A second surprise came when Truax introduced the guest speaker, WVXG General Sales Manager, Mike Schnell. Schnell made the announcement that each business attending the meeting would receive 40 complimentary commercials. The commercials could be at any time this year. The announcement put a smile and a look of astonishment on every Chamber member’s face.

Schnell outlined the details for the cooperative venture with United Way and WVXG 95.1 to support United Way and its organizations. The main event will be a Telethon with 95.1 on Nov. 13, 2014 to raise donations by phone from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in partnership with the Marion radio station. The station is asking for 12 businesses to sponsor the 12 hours dedicated to Morrow County United Way.

Chamber members who attended the July Chamber meeting and signed up to advertise, received a letter this week reminding them to contact the radio station and sign on for their 40 complimentary commercials and to think about how they would like to present their business on the radio.

Hayes said that one of the things that convinced them to try the WVXG telethon was the recommendation of other counties who had done the telethon with Mike Schnell. They said it was very successful and the radio station did everything they had promised.

Whether businesses who attended the meeting might like to sponsor an hour on the telethon on Nov. 13 is voluntary and separate from the free and complimentary commercials. Schnell said that the 40 complimentary commercials were a special thanks to Chamber members who had attended the July meeting.

Chamber members who were unable to attend the meeting are still very welcome to sponsor minutes on the Telethon Nov. 13th. Schnell and Hayes said that all who would like to sponsor an hour of the Telethon for United Way are welcome to do so whether or not they are Chamber members.

Organizations that are supported by United Way of Morrow County are: American Red Cross, Emergency Resource Council – Food Pantry, Heart of Ohio Homeless Shelter, Helpline, Maryhaven, Morrow County Community Center, Recovery and Prevention Resources, Seniors on Center and Turning Point.
