The senior citizens that come into Seniors on Center on W. Center St. have been school shopping, and local children will benefit again this year.

The annual school supply campaign is overseen by Seniors on Center Activities Director Evelyn Barnett. The seniors bring in school supplies as they come in for music or recreation, Barnett says, and they are collected until they are handed out in August.

The supplies are distributed by way of the Sonshine Bus, a renovated school bus used for religious education of children that visits certain areas during the summer. The Sonshine Bus operates May through November, visiting two locations in Cardington, two in Mt. Gilead, and Hidden Lakes. As many as 47 children may visit the bus on a Saturday between five locations. On the bus is a driver, teachers and teachers helpers.

Though Gilead Friends Churches founded the endeavor about four years ago, a committee made up of people from various local churches operate the educational project. There is no cost to the children who visit the bus.
