BOTKINS — A 16-year-old boy riding a bicycle was killed Tuesday evening when a motorist struck him from behind.


Zachary Kerns, of Botkins, was pronounced dead at the scene by an official with the Shelby County Coroner’s Office.


Kerns was riding a bicycle west on Lock Two Road when he was struck by a pickup operated by 72-year-old Richard Kuck. Kuck was driving west on Lock Two Road, just east of Kettlersville Road, when he struck Kerns, Shelby County Sheriff John Lenhart reported.


Kuck told a deputy he did not see Kerns on the road due to the sun in his eyes as he drove, Lenhart reported.


The incident remains under investigation.
