Mount Gilead Board of education held its November monthly meeting at the Tri River’s Career Center in Marion.
Prior to the board meeting Superintendent Chuck Speelman gave a tour to board and community members in attendance.
Speelman explained that Tri-Rivers has undergone many positive changes over the past few years. “This is no longer the place where students are sent, it is a place that they come for a career.” He shared that when he first came to Tri-Rivers, that some of the programs were not quality programs. He set out to change that and to build partnerships with local businesses and manufacturing. The result is 18 high quality programs which prepare students for obtaining high tech high paying careers.
The group toured the recently opened RAMTEC, Tri-Rivers Career Center’s new robotics and advanced training facility.
We thought it was critical to provide the best opportunities and training for jobs here now and in the future, not the jobs that won’t come back. RAMTEC will provide training for industrial certifications including robotics, welding and CNC (computer numerical control) operation on systems including FANUC and Yaskawa Motoman, both widely used in American manufacturing plants.”
The group also toured the Vet Tech program which houses both small and large animals on campus. Speelman explained that local veterinarians help give the students hands on experience by doing some surgical procedures there.
Speelman relayed that they have been good stewards of the districts funds as only 51% is used on salaries and benefits. “That is the lowest rate in the state of Ohio.” He said.
After the tour Speelman said “You own Tri-Rivers too. Your students come here so we appreciate it.”
Resident Howard Whiston expressed how impressed he was with the tour of Tri-Rivers and stated that everyone should take the time to take a tour of the facility.
The board then opened their regular meeting.

The board approved the resolution authorizing the issuance of up to $235,635 of bonds for school bus acquisition. There was discussion to purchase three new school buses. With the failure of the levy, the board voted to purchase two new buses as they were necessary for the safety of the students.
The PTO provided the rain forest program at the elementary. They provided the dinner for the staff on both night of parent teacher conference and the fundraiser just concluded. Secret Santa will be held soon. The PTO meets the 2nd Monday at Park Avenue Elementary Library at 5:30 p.m.
Athletic Boosters meets the 4th Monday in the HS Auditeria at 7:00 p.m.
FFA Alumni, they went to Louisville Kentucky. And it was successful. The fruit sales will be coming in about the second week of December. FFA meets the 1st Thursday in the HS Ag Building at 7:00 p.m.
