The Mount Gilead varsity swim team traveled to Marion on Jan. 8 to compete against the Marion Harding Presidents, Marion Pleasant Spartans and Ridgedale Rockets. The meet was originally supposed to include Tiffin Columbian, but they were forced to remain home due to the weather conditions. The final team rankings were: Women: Marion Pleasant. Mount Gilead, Ridgedale and Marion Harding. Men: Marion Harding, Marion Pleasant and Mount Gilead.
Scoring for the Indians were: Elly Herr, Erin Zmuda, Brianna Snow, Lexi Hinkle, Jay Stratton, Jacob Barnhart, David Kamyar, Kyle Landes, Erika Stevens, Logan Conrad, Taylor Clark, Savanah Christian, Julia Marshall, Hallie Marlow, Marion McGill, Kurtis Brown and Andrew McFarland.
Despite missing several practices due to the weather cancellations these swimmers were able to continue to improve upon their personal best times: Snow, Colton Long, Marlow, Marshall, Stratton, Conrad, Hinkle and Courtney West.
The Indians then joined the 10th annual Viking Invitational hosted by Teays Valley on Jan. 11. There were 15 teams represented. The Purple and White went without a full squad due to injuries and a conflicting schedule for Honors Band. The women stepped up to the challenge and walked away with second place overall finish, while the men tallied enough points to earn fifth place overall.
Senior Captain David Kamyar swam the 100 yard breaststroke fast enough to pass Charlie Ray as the third fastest man in Mt.Gilead school history in this event.
Scoring for the Indians were Taylor Clark, Courtney West, Erin Zmuda, Lexi Hinkle, Jay Stratton, Jacob Barnhart, Kamyar, Kyle Landes, Andrew McFarland, Logan Conrad, Aaron Evans, Kurtis Brown, Spencer Faux, Hallie Marlow, Savanah Christian, Julia Marshall and Marion McGill.
Improving their times were Evans, Colton Long, Faux, Christian, Marshall, McGill, Landes, Marlow and Kamyar.
