An offensive explosion paced Cardington to a 49-13 win over Worthington Christian on the road Friday night.

The Pirates scored three touchdowns in both the first and second quarters to lead 42-0 at the half on their way to taking the lopsided win.

In the first quarter, Luke McCarrell threw for three touchdown passes, connecting with Daniel Kill for 11 yards and then hitting Nate Craig for scores of 16 and 10 yards. Christian Huffman ran for a 50-yard touchdown in the second quarter before McCarrell tossed two more touchdown passes, connecting with Kill for 20 yards and Garrett Wagner for 74.

After a pair of third-quarter touchdowns by Worthington Christian, McCarrell would finish the game’s scoring with a 23-yard scoring run. Brandon Steckel connected on all seven of his point-after attempts.

McCarrell completed nine passes for 152 yards in the game. Wagner caught one for 74 yards, while both Kill and Devin Pearl added three receptions. Huffman picked up 149 yards on the ground, while McCarrell scrambled for 68 more.

Highland Scots

A slow start proved costly for Highland in a 31-21 loss at Bloom-Carroll Friday.

The Scots trailed 10-0 after the first quarter and would not be able to erase that deficit. The score was 17-7 at the half, 24-14 after three quarter and still a 10-point margin when the game ended.

Both teams put up a lot of offense, with Bloom-Carroll finishing with 494 yards and Highland tallying 362. Jared Limings led the Scots with 133 rushing yards, while Josh Cantrell added 56 and a score and Brock Veley picked up 34 and a touchdown. Max Schreiber completed 11 passes for 115 yards, with Dylan Tuggle catching five for 39 and a score, while Isaiah Stoneburner got three for 59 yards.
