Highland fell in their season-opening girls’ basketball contest by a 59-41 margin to host Utica Tuesday.

Utica got out to a fast start, taking a 13-7 lead after the first quarter. Highland trimmed one point off that deficit in the second to enter half behind 27-22. Unfortunately for the Scots, their opponents took the third by a 20-8 margin and were able to hold on for the win.

Cardington Pirates

Ontario rode a strong second-half performance in edging Cardington by a 49-48 margin on Tuesday.

The host Pirates led 9-7 after the first quarter and 24-17 at the half, but the Warriors roared back in the third quarter to get within a 34-33 margin. They would then take the fourth by a 16-14 margin to finish on top by one.

Kyndall Spires led Cardington with 17 points, while Kynlee Edwards picked up 11.
