Cardington advanced in the Division III softball tournament by cruising past Grandview by a 10-0 margin on Thursday.

The Pirates scored once in the first inning, but then tallied four in the second and three in the third to pull away. Two more runs in the fifth allowed Cardington to run-rule their opponents and advance to Tuesday’s district semifinal contest with Amanda-Clearcreek at Olentangy High School.

Cardington outhit their opponents 11-4 and also took advantage of five Bobcat errors. Casey Bertke earned the win for the Pirates.

Highland Scots

In a home Division III tournament game against Ready on Thursday, Highland couldn’t hold an early lead in falling by a 12-5 margin.

The Scots scored three runs in the first inning, but gave up six in the third, four on a grand slam to fall in a hole. They got two in their half of the third to get within a 6-5 score, but couldn’t add to that total. Ready would then gradually pull away, getting one run in the fourth, four in the sixth and one more in the seventh.

Kaitlyn Carney had a two-run homer and two-run double in the game, while Mattie Ruehrmund also picked up a pair of hits.
