The Cardington baseball team got off to a strong start against Newark Catholic in their district semifinal bout at Heath High School on Tuesday, but couldn’t hold on in losing a 15-9 decision.

After giving up two runs in the opening inning, the Pirates scored seven in the second to take a five-run lead. Newark Catholic scored four in the third and both teams tallied one each in the fourth, but Cardington still held an 8-7 lead with three innings to play.

Unfortunately for Cardington, they gave up four in the fifth to fall behind by an 11-8 margin. They got within two in the top of the sixth, but surrendered four more in the bottom of the inning to wind up falling by a six-run score.
