Cardington grateful for help during water leak

CARDINGTON — A review of the recent water leak was given when Village Council met on Oc. 15. Danny Wood, village administrator, gave a detailed account of the leak on Oct. 2-4 which affected the entire village and the high school.

Wood thanked those who assisted with the situation from street and fire department members to village staff members.

“Everyone was very helpful,” he said, specifically thanking several individuals and groups for their prompt help.

Fiscal Officer Deb Fry said a formal thank you would be published in the newspaper. Water was donated by two vendors and purchased from another. Three skids of water that was not used was donated to victims of Hurricane Michael in Florida.

In other business:

• Council authorized the purchase of a 2018 Toyota Tacoma pick-up for the village administrator. The truck replaces one that is being given to the waster treatment plant operator and his will be junked.

• Police Chief James Wallace said the village was chosen to be a test location for the E-Citation upgrade made to the Baldwin Group Mayors Court software. Cardington was selected based on the accuracy of both the Cardington Police Department and the mayors court clerk work in this area.

• Fire Chief Gary Goodman said the department has made 143 runs this year. The Department’s members had participated in the homecoming parade and several members worked the pop shack at the homecoming game.

He said 80 kindergarten students had visited the fire department during Fire Prevention Week and the department had visited first grade students with their Safety House. They also distributed water during the village crisis.

• The ordinance requesting an application to rezone parcels of land on Williams and Reichelderfer streets from existing agriculture district to special district was given a final reading and approval. This land to be used as a soccer field is under the ownership of the Cardington Recreation Board.

The dedication and confirmation of Kenny Lane in the village was accepted and approved by ordinance as was an ordinance vacating a portion of Kenny Lane.

Fry said the village’s application for an ODNR grant was approved, the only one received from Morrow County. She said it is hoped to use the grant for a shelter house and electricity in the Maxwell Park. She said $28,934 was allocated. Theyhad $32,260, so it is hoped that will allow electric service to be installed.

• Council approved a resolution authorizing the written return to the Morrow County auditor pursuant to the village ordinance regarding removal of noxious weeds. Expenses incurred removing weeds from these three properties totaled $1,024.
