Former Mount Gilead football player Mitchell Sayers will continue to compete in that sport this fall for McPherson College in Kansas.

Sayers will compete at the Division II level at McPherson — a school that quickly got his interest.

“They reached out to me and gave me a wonderful opportunity to go play football and continue my academic career,” he said. “I felt it was the best opportunity for my development.”

And it wasn’t a difficult decision for him to make.

“It was a fairly easy process,” Sayers continued. “When they reached out to me, I think it was January 2, they reached out to me and they offered me an official scholarship. I was ecstatic. I visited that same week and I felt an instant connection there.”

Sayers, who will major in environmental stewardship, is excited to spend time in another state and learn new things there.

“I’m excited that it gives me a different journey,” he said. “I’ll be able to diversify myself and explore new ideas and possibly bring them back home and bring some of my ideas and spread them out in the midwest, too.”

While on the McPherson football team, Sayers plans to play on the offensive line. He looks forward to the opportunity to grow as a player over the next few years.

“I think some of the conflicts are going to be that it’s going to be a totally different environment,” he said. “With it being a totally different environment, it will also give me some really good opportunities for myself to grow.”

He added that he feels his work ethic should help him.

“Memories I’m going to take with me are definitely the memories of me pushing when no one else was around,” he said. “If you’re able to push yourself when no one else is looking, that’s when you know you’ll make it far in life.”

Sayers is looking forward to college life — in particular, the concept of learning new ideas from different people.

“I’m looking forward to being able to explore new ideas,” he said. “That’s kind of the main theme. I’m really looking forward to that. I’m looking forward to meeting some new friends and just getting my name out there.”
