Heritage Day returns for 47th year

The 47th annual Heritage Day Festival in Chesterville will take place on Saturday, Sept. 14. This free event has something fun for all ages, right at the intersection of state routes 95 and 314. Organized yearly by the Chesterville Community Events nonprofit, the proceeds go right back into the local community in the form of donations. This year’s recipient will be Morrow Manor Nursing Home.

Many old favorite events will be returning this year. The cruise-in is a huge draw for car lovers of all types. The parade at noon is always full of floats and people tossing candy to the children — and adults — watching from the sidewalks. If you like to shop, there will be dozens of vendors with all kinds of handcrafted goodies. If tractors are more your speed, this year’s tractor show is looking to be our biggest yet.

New to the Heritage Day lineup is this year’s musical entertainment. Highland’s marching band will be performing after the parade, a local Dixieland combo will be performing after the pie auction, and regional favorite Barefoot McCoy will be playing on the village office porch, under the big tent, or wherever the spirit takes him.

While the pie and cake judging happens annually, new this year is a junior category for kids 14 and under. Aspiring bakers can bring in their creations to show off to the crowds, and know there will be awards for all junior entrants.

Visitors to The Heritage Day Festival can start their day with muffins and coffee at the Community Christian Church, then take in some good music while visiting any of the five food vendors. After the parade, Selover Public Library is sponsoring activities for the kids, including Juggler Tom Sparough, a self-described “sky painter.”

Don’t be late getting a seat at the pie and cake auction, and once the scent of sugar has left the building, we will be setting up for an evening of karaoke. Whether you can sing or not, this event is as much fun to watch as it is to participate.

Registration forms for the parade and the pie/cake judging can be found on the Chesterville Heritage Day Facebook page, in person at Selover Library, or at Chesterville Grocery. Everyone is encouraged to participate, and you don’t need to live in the village.

Chesterville Heritage Day Festivities are scheduled to run from 10 a.m. through 7 p.m. at least, and perhaps longer if karaoke is still being enjoyed. All are welcome!
