Northmor outlasts Centerburg Friday

After jumping out to a big first quarter lead, Northmor was able to fend off host Centerburg to improve to 4-0 in football.

In their 34-26 win on the road, the Golden Knights got scoring runs of 50 and 55 yards by Cowin Becker, who also caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from A.J. Bower in the period, to jump out to a 21-6 lead.

The Trojans would battle back to within a 21-19 margin going into the half and then took the lead with a third quarter touchdown. Northmor would regain the advantage later in the period when Bower connected with Becker again — this time for a 76-yard score. Bower would net his third touchdown pass in the fourth quarter, hitting Bo Landin for 15 yards to give the Golden Knights some breathing room.

Becker had a big day for Northmor, running for 186 yards and adding 145 through the air on nine receptions. Bower hit on 14-of-24 passes for 216 yards. Also, Carson Campbell ran for 41 yards and Landin had two catches for 31.

Mount Gilead Indians

The Mount Gilead Indians couldn’t hold on to a halftime lead at Danville in a 20-8 loss to the Blue Devils Friday night.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Indians got on the board in the second period when Wyatt Long connected with Eliot Jones on an 11-yard scoring pass. Long added the two-point run to give MG an 8-0 lead. However, Danville would cut the deficit to 8-6 by the intermission. The hosts would then move in front 12-8 by the end of the third period and added eight more points in the fourth to win by 12.

“Our boys played very hard tonight,” said head coach Mike Reid. “This is a tough loss against a tough team. We did so many things right, but we probably made just a few more mistakes than Danville did. Coach Blum has a great program. Year after year, they are very solid. We had some opportunities and were not able to capitalize.”

Cam Vickers ran for 82 yards in the game, while Carson Barnum added 60 on the ground. Wyatt Long hit on 3-of-7 passes for 49 yards, with Vickers, Jones and Carson Trainer all picking up receptions.

Cardington Pirates

Cardington could not overcome a slow start at Fredericktown on Friday in falling 45-18 to the Freddies.

Fredericktown jumped out to a 19-0 lead after the opening period. Both teams played evenly over the middle two quarters, with the Freddies holding a 13-12 edge over that period to lead 32-12 going into the fourth. They would take a 13-6 advantage over the final 12 minutes to finish on top.

Wyatt Denney had a big day on the ground for the Pirates, recording a pair of touchdowns and 254 yards rushing. Journey Williamson, who scored the other touchdown on the ground, threw for 37 yards on 4-of-11 passing. Kalin Briggs picked up two receptions for 20 yards.
