At a special Mount Gilead Village Council meeting on Aug. 26, council members voted unanimously to make a bid on the property located at 114 Iberia St. in Mount Gilead, which previously served as the home of the Morrow County Shopper’s Compass.

The meeting was called solely to discuss the purchase of the building. After touring the building, council members discussed how much remodeling would cost and how it could be used.

Police Chief Adam Lakey and Village Administrator Derek Allen suggested it could be used for the police department. This would allow space in the municipal building to enlarge the council meeting room, and the current administration offices could be moved into the area presently used by the police.

All council members agreed they should try to make a bid on the property since there was another party interested. The building is also beside the village fire department, which they agreed was another good reason to purchase the property.

The bid of $185,000 was voted on and all six council members voted to approve the bid. Mayor Donna Carver said the seller has accepted the council’s bid, however closure of the sale had not yet been finalized as of the Sept. 3 council meeting.

The Shopper’s Compass announced in its final Aug. 26 issue it was closing permanently. This was the 56th year for the advertising paper in Morrow County
